Tyson Chillog

What are your top 3 priorities of City Council if reelected ?
A councillor needs to listen and be open and transparent , it allows you to be a strong spokesperson for the community . For the last ten years as a Councillor I have and will continue to be that voice . I am proud of the accomplishments that Martensville has seen in the last ten years , understanding that change is inevitable so I remain committed to making sure that it is meaningful , organized , and responsible . Martensville has seen many positive developments in its residential and commercial areas , my second priority is that it will remain properly managed and well engineered . If the people of Martensville do not feel safe nothing else matters . With accelerated population growth come new challenges like crime prevention and safe and efficient roadways . Council along with the RCMP have created a working document that will provide tangible outcomes that will allow our policing to be proactive in our community . Council has worked tirelessly with the provincial government and has seen a tender awarded for the development of a new overpass on Highway twelve and main street . These three priorities are important and I look forward for your support to keep them .

Q & A With Your City Council Candidates

Questions were submitted by Martensville residents that attended the October 6th Candidates Forum . Due to time constraints , the Martensville Chamber of Commerce was unable to ask all publicly submitted questions . Candidates were provided an opportunity to submit answers to a question of their choice . Unfortunately , all candidates were unable to provide answers ; however , you can view videos from the Candidates Forum by visiting the ‘ Martensville Chamber of Commerce ’ Facebook page .

Debbie McGuire

What motivates you to run for council ?
My name is Debbie McGuire and I have lived in Martensville for 36 years and worked for the City for 25 years . I believe Martensville needs to encourage businesses to settle and stay so that our community can benefit , along with the business , from having local establishments that not only draw from within the City limits , but also the surrounding areas , therefore sustaining the City ’ s economy and growth .
We need to accommodate our seniors in providing a variety of housing initiatives for those who are not quite ready for a senior ’ s home or high-rise condo .
As a bedroom community , we need to encourage all ages to stay and play and take advantage of our existing facilities . We need to make those facilities affordable and accessible to everyone and offer programs that interest all ages with all abilities . Hopefully this will foster less vandalism .
I am running for Council because I simply want to be a part of the growth and vision of the future and be a voice for your questions and concerns . I have the passion for Martensville , it ’ s residents , it ’ s employees and it ’ s businesses and I want to do whatever I can to make it a better place to call HOME .

Marcy Cross Would you enact and enforce a snow removal bylaw ?

I don ’ t believe a bylaw is the answer . I believe we need to amend the budget . We need to take money from a number of places that are currently over financed and put that money into the snow budget . It is currently dramatically underfunded . The citizens of Martensville deserve to have the snow hazard addressed in a manor the fits our climate to call HOME .

Robert Postma What are your top 3 priorities on City Council if elected ?

1 . To ensure that our community and its citizens are safe and secure and when needed there are adequate numbers of first responders in the community to assist where required . This would include police , fire and emergency medical services .
2 . I will be a strong voice as a council member to keep taxes as low as possible in order to attract both new residents and new businesses to Martensville . I will also be a voice for seniors regarding available and affordable housing in order to keep our seniors in Martensville .
3 . Keeping in mind “ WANTS VS NEEDS ”, spending tax dollars wisely , getting the “ Best Bang ” for the BUCK , without limiting services that are reasonable to Martensville tax payers and residents .

Geoff Baker Would you enact and enforce a snow removal bylaw ?

This question could refer to two different bylaws .
1 . Forcing residents to remove snow from their property within days of snowfall , similar to the bylaw in Saskatoon . The cost of enforcing such a bylaw is greater than the city of Saskatoon expected and thus very few people are ticketed for failing to clear their walkways . It is admirable for our residents to keep their sidewalks clean , but I do not believe we need more government involvement on the issue . Instead , we just need to speak to our neighbors and see if they need help with their walks , we can gain a lot by being good neighbors .
2 . Enacting a city wide street snow removal plan that competes with neighboring communities . It is true that Martensville has not been as aggressive at cleaning snow from our roads as other communities but there is not a simple solution . In the 2015 audited financials , Warman collected revenues of $ 10,636,988 from taxes and other unconditional revenue . In the same year , Martensville collected revenues of $ 8,902,197 from taxes and unconditional revenue . Despite having a smaller population , Warman collects more tax dollars and thus can take on a costly project like fast snow removal .
I believe that Martensville can achieve a similar result , but we MUST NOT increase residential taxation rates . Instead we have to grow our commercial tax base by expanding commercial zoning opportunities . Warman has commercial properties spread throughout their city , same with every major city in Saskatchewan with the exception of Martensville .
In order for Martensville to support local business , and grow our local business opportunities , we need to provide more locations throughout Martensville for companies to operate , and working with the Economic Development Department at City Hall , I believe we can succeed .
