Prairie Spirit School Division
Removes Microwaves From
Classrooms
Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger
A notice was sent out to parents with students in the Prairie Spirit School Division
(PSSD) Thursday, October 6th announcing that the school division will be removing all
microwaves from within their school’s hallways and classrooms. This is part of a provincial
initiative as the Emergency Management and Fire Safety branch of the Government of
Saskatchewan is preparing a School Fire Safety Guide for all school divisions in the
province. “These guidelines are not new requirements, but they will serve to inform the
education sector of the existing building codes, and will provide a practical interpretation
or application of these codes,” Brenda Erickson of PSSD, explained.
This guide states that microwaves can no longer be used and located in classrooms
or hallways, as this increases fi re safety risks in schools. “Schools in Prairie Spirit School
Division are in the process of complying with the directive from the Government of
Saskatchewan,” Erickson added.
In the notice that was sent to parents, the school division apologized for the
inconvenience, noting that the microwaves would “no longer be available for student use”.
There will still be microwaves allowed in staff rooms and kitchens.
