Huskies Have Championship Weekend

Janine Hayward , Martensville Messenger
The Women ’ s Huskie Basketball team and Men ’ s Hockey team were both at home for their Canada West championship weekend . In women ’ s basketball , Saskatoon , Regina , Winnipeg , and Alberta were in the conference final four vying for the Canada West championship . The Huskies who were seeded number one for the tournament , faced the Alberta Pandas on Friday night to a sold-out crowd . The Pandas had the 29-26 lead at the half but the Huskies took over to take the 72-62 win and earned a spot in the West final against Regina Cougars . Saturday was another packed PAC Center for the “ All Saskatchewan ”, final as the Huskies faced the Regina Cougars . The Huskies had the lead at the half and never looked back taking the 64-53 win to become the Canada West Champions . This was their fifth title . Sabine Dukate scored 25 points for the Huskies and was named Athlete of the week . Both teams will travel to Victoria for the national title . Saskatchewan is seeded number two in the country and is looking to defend their national title in Victoria .
The Men ’ s Hockey team hosted the Alberta Golden Bears as they staged a repeat of last year ’ s Canada West final . Saskatchewan defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars while the Golden Bears beat the Calgary Dinos to get to the final . The Huskies swept the Bears 4-0 and 3-2 in 2016 but history would not repeat itself . Alberta had something to prove and took the first game Friday night . Saturday , the sell-out hometown crowd got behind their dogs at Rutherford rink and the Huskies took the win taking it to a third game Sunday .
In Sunday ’ s game Carson Stadnyk capitalized for Saskatchewan when Alberta failed to clear the puck and the Huskies struck first . Alberta broke up a pass at the blueline to tie things up . Connor Gay regained the lead for the Huskies on a power play . It was a third period collapse for the dogs as the Golden Bears took advantage of the power play padding their lead and nine seconds later found the net again . Jordan Tkatch cut the Alberta lead to two but the empty netter sealed the 6-3 win for the Golden Bears . Both teams will travel to Fredericton for the University Cup hosted by UNV Varsity Reds on March 16-19 .
Marauder Alumni , Jesse Forsberg is having a stellar year on defense with the Huskies . This is his third year with the dogs and he had an impressive season . On January 16 , he was athlete of the week after scoring a hat trick and assisting on a goal in an 8-2 win over the Calgary Dinos . This week Forsberg was named to the Canada Allstar team along with teammate goalie , Jordan Cooke . On Thursday , he was also named the top defenceman in the Canada West conference . Statistically he ’ s put up 11 goals , 16 assists in 28 games played . Good luck to the Huskies on their road to the University Cup National
