The Barn Playhouse Opens For The 26th Season

Marcy Cross , Martensville Messenger
Vickie Dyck , Director for the Barn Playhouse productions , grew up on the farmland where the Barn Playhouse is located with her sisters . Dyck , who used to teach theater , came up with an idea approximately 25 years ago to bring in local actors to come out and perform . “ I talked to my parents about using the old abandoned barn and it took off from there . One of the great things about Community Theater is that you can come out and watch someone you know . A lot of times , we find that someone from the audience decides that next time , they want to audition ,” Dyck stated . The Barn Playhouse does two shows throughout the summer , then a more “ laid-back ” travelogue of a show that features Dyck ’ s family ’ s band and the performers finish off the year with a Christmas dinner show .
The barn has been on the Dyck family farm for the last seventy-four years . It has seen generations of children rubbing the sleep from their eyes as they moved through the ritual morning of chores to return later in the day swinging from ropes in the hayloft and building hay bale tunnels . But the barn has a new life now . The Barn Playhouse opened as a community theatre in 1991 , producing different shows each summer , celebrating rural life , farming and family . The Craft Barn also opened that year for the first time . Then in 1995 they opened their dining room to cater banquets .
The 2016 season kicked off with a performance of ‘ The Wizard of Oz ’, a show that features six actors from Martensville ; Tanja Funk , Max Heraman , Jo- Anne Nickel , Cassidy Funk , Cole Zacharias and Steven Baldwin . Some of the actors are new to the Barn Playhouse stage , while others have been at it longer . “ Our witch for ‘ The Wizard of Oz ’ has been a season ticket holder for many years , and decided
to challenge herself ,” Dyck explained . Tanja Funk , who has been going to plays at the Barn Playhouse for around nine years , wanted to get out of her comfort zone and try something new , while Max Heraman has performed in musical theater before and wanted to try it again . Cole Zacharias also wanted to try a more professional musical theater . The actors have been having a lot of fun and are very excited to tackle the run of the play .
The second summer play will be ‘ The Miracle Worker ’. Tickets are on sale now and will go fast . “ We make an effort to add extra days when we can . We want to make sure that everyone who wants to see a show has the chance ,” Dyck added . The final show for 2016 will be ‘ It ’ s A Wonderful Life ’. The end of year show is always something extra special .
For information about upcoming plays and ticket information please visit barnplayhouse . com or call 306-239-4600 .
Beginning at 1:00pm family activities will include face painting , donut on a string , puzzles , crafts , a scavenger hunt , and other carnival games .
