MHS Students Participate in Wake-a-Thon Tyler Janzen, Martensville Messenger All school submissions provided by VHS, VMS and MHS Space Tomatoes? The grade six classes at Valley Manor have been participating in a national science experiment called Tomatosphere. Sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency, the purpose of the experiment is to solve the question "Will seeds exposed to near zero gravity conditions germinate?" Students received two packets of seeds: a control group and a group that had been on the International Space Station for 5 weeks. Without knowing which packet contained each type of seed, students planted seeds and counted the germination of each type. We discovered that one package germinated approximately two days before the other. The number of plants that germinated were about the same. Which seeds sprouted faster? SPACE SEEDS! With the race to colonize space, this experiment proves that seeds will germinate. It's too early to tell if fruit will be produced, but we can't wait to taste our space tomatoes!! Last Friday the Martensville High School SRC took part in their annual WakeA-Thon. This is where students who were a part of the Student Representative Council raised money for the school. To do this they were to stay awake one hour for every dollar they raised. Together we raised about $400 dollars which was about $25 per person. Therefore, we had to stay up for 25 hours each and it was not easy. We had a meeting at midnight and around 4 o’clock we cleaned out the SRC room which was cluttered with d ecorations and supplies for various spirit days and holidays. When we weren’t doing work we passed the time and stayed awake by playing hide and go seek, and capture the flag in the darkness of the new school. Before we knew it the time had passed and we had made it to 5 o’clock! It was really a great night and a fantastic way to raise money for the school. BELOW: VMS students with their ‘Space Tomatoes’.
