Planning for Recreation and Parks Underway Community Input Requested

The City of Martensville is undertaking a research and planning exercise to help provide direction in regards to future recreational needs as the City continues to grow .
The City of Martensville Recreation and Parks Master Plan is being developed to help guide the City in its decisionmaking and policysetting regarding existing and future recreation infrastructure , parks , trails , programs and services . RC Strategies has been contracted to help the City create the Plan .
“ As the city continues to grow , a strategic approach is needed to address the opportunities and challenges that exist when it comes to how we provide recreation and parks services ,” says Kent Muench , Mayor of the City of Martensville . “ This planning is so important because according to our research , we know residents place a high value on our recreation programs and services and our parks , and with over 30 community events occurring annually in Martensville , it ’ s easy to see the commitment to recreation that exists within the City .”
As part of the plan development , a number of research activities will be conducted , including gathering input from the community via a household survey , interviews with key stakeholders , surveys of community groups and students , public events , and open houses .
Dave Bosch , Director of Recreation and Community Services says the Master Plan will explore how well City facilities and spaces are currently being used and what future preferences in the community will be . “ The Plan will also provide valuable information on existing and future population impacts on the need for services , how other communities are providing services to their residents , and the trends and issues that exist in the provision of recreation ,” says Bosch . “ The Plan will be reviewed on a regular basis to address on-going changes in human resource , capacity , and service delivery needs .”
The first opportunity residents will have to provide input will be via a survey that will be mailed to every household in Martensville shortly . The survey will cover topics including residents ’ current assessment of recreation and parks programs and services in Martensville , their motivations to seeking services , any barriers they face when seeking services , as well as what their recreation and parks program and services needs will be in the future . Residents are asked to complete the survey and return it as quickly as possible in the postage-paid addressed envelope included .
The public will have additional opportunities to provide input to , and comment on , the Plan . More information regarding these opportunities will be shared in the near future .
The scheduled completion date for the Master Plan is mid 2017 .

You Lost Your Wallet , Now What ?

Lacie Munholland , Martensville Messenger
Losing your wallet or having someone take advantage of your personal information is frustrating . The Messenger spoke to Jocelyn Ottenbreit about lost wallets and online banking scams . In 2014 , Ottenbreit received an email that she had completed an e-transfer for $ 1500 , and another e-transfer for $ 500 on the same day . Ottenbreit was informed of the situation from her bank via email and it turned out to be scam . She had to go through the process of getting a new account number as well as all new credit cards . Luckily in the end , her money was returned to her . Ottenbreit then had her wallet stolen in May of 2016 and experienced the process all over again . With all personal information stolen , “ I recommend making sure you get your bank to notify you when transactions occur . Definitely do not leave all credit cards and all identification in one wallet . Keep your licence , your health card and one credit card with you . Don ’ t ever carry around your SIN card .” commented Ottenbreit .
There are a few basic steps you need to take if your wallet has been lost / stolen . First , cancel all of your credit cards and notify your bank immediately .

Marcy Cross , Martensville Messenger
The Saskatoon Swim School ’ s first group session in Martensville is currently underway in the Canalta Hotel indoor pool . Kaylee Kennedy , the President of the Saskatoon Swim School , was pleased with the amount of interest there was in the program . “ Everyone was so excited . People in Warman , even people 45 minutes away from Martensville were so excited by the idea of not having to go into Saskatoon for lessons . Our first session was sold out ,” Kennedy stated .
There will be a summer session beginning July 4th , that will last 8 weeks . This program will be a mom and tot session from five months to 24 months , and there will be private lessons for ages two years old , all the way up to seniors . “ We specialize in one-on-one private lessons . Swimming is an individual sport , so why not teach it individually ,” Kennedy added . Lessons are a great way to get your child comfortable with the water at a young
age . “ Basically what ’ s being taught is getting the parents to be comfortable with a swimmer . Any baby can learn how to swim . We ’ re making sure the parents are nice and easy with the kids ,” explained Kennedy .
The Saskatoon Swim School runs most of its programs in hotel pools throughout Saskatoon and is looking at even more venues . They are opening a school in Regina and will be looking to change their name as they expand . The Swim School is experiencing a very high demand . “ The program we teach is very effective . We only hear positive feedback . We ’ re seeing tremendous progress from all of our kids .”

If you ’ re someone who has numerous cards and pieces of information in your wallet , we suggest making a list of your wallets contents and keeping it somewhere safe .
