Pawsitive Independence Seeks Volunteers

Ciara O ’ Reilly , Martensville Messenger
Pawsitive Independence Autism Service Dogs of Saskatchewan is an organization made up of dedicated individuals whom are committed to providing fullyequipped and trained companion , therapy , and service dogs to Saskatchewan families for children with autism between the ages of 2-18 . This organization ’ s success is solely reliant on the work put forth by volunteers . An information session presenting and explaining the various positions available for volunteers was held in the Kinsmen Room at Martensville ’ s Sport Centre January 4th . The session was run by Pawsitive Independence volunteer Jean-Anne Jackson .
Jackson was exceptionally knowledgeable in explaining the different volunteer positions available ,
and even brought a special guest of her own , a fivemonth-old shepherd-mix , Cage . Cage was donated by the North Battleford Humane society when he was roughly six-weeks old . Jackson is a volunteer for the

Independence , along with Cage . Puppy Raiser program , “ Cage is the second puppy for me to be raising through the Puppy Raiser program ”, says Jackson . It takes a lot of dedication to volunteer for the Puppy Raiser position , especially since the pup must stay by your side at all possible times . Whether it is work , social gatherings or running errands , the pup must attend whilst wearing the appropriate equipment . Puppy Raisers tend to pups for fourteen months of their young lives , at which point they are then transferred into the adult dog raiser program .
The Adult Raiser program differs from that of the Puppy Raiser program . Its main difference would be the requirement in taking the dog to training classes from 9:00am to 4:00pm ; adult dogs are not required to be at the raiser ’ s side 24 / 7 . Classes take place five days a week , so raisers must be available for pick-up and drop offs . Once the dog has completed its extensive training , it is placed with a child on the autism spectrum between the ages of 2 and 18 . One day , the dog will have to retire as its physical well-being is critical in order to be worked as a service dog . Once the dog hits retirement , the working vest may be taken off and the dog can live its normal doggy life .
There are many other volunteering positions that involve less hands-on options for those who simply do not have the time / space to care for a four-legged creature . Positions include Grant and Fundraising committees , an Assistance Dogs International Certification Team , Media and Marketing teams , Record Keeping , and Special Events and Fundraiser personnel . Hands-on volunteer positions include Training Assistants , Puppy Raisers , Adult Dog Raisers , Kennel Attendants , and Boarding Home operators .
If you are looking to get more involved in your community and are up for this worthwhile volunteer opportunity contact Pawsitive Independence today ! There are currently immediate positions to fill such as Treasurer , Fundraising Coordinator and lots of Adult Dog Raiser spots . Simply contact PawsitiveIndependenceASD @ gmail . com for more information on how you can help out .

Adoptable Pets of the Week Ciara O ’ Reilly , Martensville Messenger titan

Looking for a trustworthy , smart , loving , and furry companion ? Look no further ! Titan , a Shepherd- Mastiff mix obtains all of these qualities and more . Titan has been on the hunt for his forever home for quite some time , and though he has stolen the hearts of many along the way , the search continues on . This four-yearold pup knows many basic tricks including sit , stay , lay down , heel , and his favourite : HUG . That ’ s right , Titan is a hugger . Though playful and curious , Titan is also extremely well behaved on leash , “ once his leash is on his brain gets turned on ”, says Megan , Kennel Attendant at Paws Republic . Titan is a special needs case as he has a degenerative eye
condition which will slowly affect his vision throughout the years , but this is no deal breaker . Titan adjusts so well and is fantastic around other dogs . His deterioration in sight does not compromise his love for everyday curiosities in the least . Titan loves people once he gets a chance to know them and does exceptionally well in following commands . “ Titan is getting pretty familiar with this place ; he is such a sweet dog that is well deserving of a good home ,” stated Megan . Help find this lovable pup a place to call home for many years to come . Contact or visit Paw ’ s Republic at 323 Centennial Drive S , Martensville . Phone : ( 306 ) 934-7297 .

tuffy
This long-haired cat once belonged to a loving home , however due to some complications Paw ’ s Republic took it upon their hands to find Tuffy a new place to call home . At approximately five years old , this grumpy-looking suck loves people . Tuffy is a big , black , long-haired male with bright yellow eyes and a knack for melting your heart . Tuffy loves attention and is looking for yours ! Help find this friendly kitty a loving , forever home . Contact or visit Paw ’ s Republic at 323 Centennial Drive S , Martensville . Phone : ( 306 ) 934-7297 .
Paw ’ s Republic offers a fairly simple adoption process . If one is interested in adopting they would simply contact Paws Republic by phone or email and express their interest . Following this , Paws Republic would then set up a time for them to meet the animal . From there an adoption application would be submitted and an approval process would take place which may include a home visit .
Please note that Paw ’ s Republic is not a rescue that takes in any case that comes along . They will only take in animals that often have no other option due to behavioural concerns or training needs that are outside of the family or rescue group ’ s resources to modify . Paw ’ s does not usually take in cats but sometimes circumstances bring them in such as a clients passing , strays coming in and no other rescues having openings . Resources are often very limited as all the care and training comes out of Paw ’ s Republics ’ own pocket .
