BELOW : All three VMS grade 7 classes got together to be one band of 66 students and played Christmas Carols in the gym for the grade K - 4 classes on the last day of school before break . This was their very first concert ever , and they did great ! The songs included Jingle Bells , Jolly Old St . Nick and Good King Wenceslas , among other pieces . ( Photo submitted ).

Martensville High School Student Selected For Top Canadian Scholarship

A Martensville High School ( MHS ) student was recently selected as a finalist for the Loran Award , Canada ’ s most comprehensive undergraduate scholarship for character , service and leadership . Jasmine Petit was nominated by MHS and was one of 4,400 students to apply . A total of 84 finalists were selected nationwide , with two being from Saskatchewan , including Petit .
The Loran Scholars Foundation is a national charity that partners with universities across the country , investing in young Canadians who demonstrate character , service and leadership potential . LORAN , which stands for Long-Range Aid to Navigation , is a system that uses three points , consisting of character , service and leadership to determine one ’ s course for a long journey .
Petit has already participated in a full day of regional interviews , which took place in Saskatoon this past November . From there , Petit has been invited to attend the Loran Scholars Foundation ’ s national selections , which will take place in Toronto February 3rd and 4th . “ After the national selections , the Loran Scholars Foundation will select up to 32 Loran Scholars ,” Julia Lo , the Loran Scholar Marketing & Communications Senior Manager , stated .
Petit has an impressive schedule that helps to make her stand out for such a prestigious opportunity . Petit teaches group fitness classes and served as Captain of the MHS volleyball team , and also played on the University of Saskatchewan ’ s youth volleyball team . In addition , the MHS senior is an Executive Member of Student Council , and through that has ran advertising , athletic and extracurricular committees at school . On top of everything , Petit also plays fastball , runs track and field and designs school posters .
The Loran Award is valued at $ 100,000 over four years of undergraduate study and includes a $ 10,000 annual stipend , tuition waivers from one of 25 Canadian universities , mentorship , summer internship funding , an orientation expedition in Algonquin Park , along with annual retreats and forums . All finalists that are not selected are eligible to receive a $ 3,000 finalist award .
