Martensville Veterinary Hospital hit a new milestone during the month of January , marking 25 years in business ! Throughout the years , the hospital has changed in many aspects and the services provided have certainly come a long way . As Martensville grew as a city , the Vet Hospital grew in clients and expansion of space , services , and technology . “ The hospital started as a strip mall and we only had a portion of the space , as we grew we obviously needed more space so the whole strip was bought ,” says veterinary technologist Kate Dean . One of the major changes since the facility opened 25 years ago would include becoming AAHA accredited in 2004 . The abbreviation stands for American Animal Hospital Association and this accreditation merely means that your local vet hospital holds itself to a higher standard , and that pets are receiving care at a hospital that has passed the highest standards in veterinary care . This authorization gives the hospital certain standards to set and policies to mandate , for example , the ‘ feline friendly ’ directive . Of course , there are many other things that have changed at the hospital throughout the years .
One of the most drastic changes that has taken place at the Veterinary Hospital would certainly be the growth in technology . Technology has come a long way over the years , and Martensville ’ s Vet Hospital has done well in keeping up with the times and providing the best service to their patients and people alike . In exam rooms , scales have been electronically advanced to suit the needs of dogs of all ages , sizes , and abilities . All pet records are also stored digitally , making it very easy to access all of their past wellness history . In keeping all records filed digitally , it is easier to keep pet records up-to-date and information can be viewed in various formats such as charts , graphs and columns . Various types of informational viewing ( diagrams ) can make it easier to view growth and weight rates , which improves care provision significantly .
Various treatment services are offered to all small animal patients of the vet hospital . Services include surgeries / major surgeries , dental treatments , micro-chipping , boarding , x-rays , antibiotics , prescriptions , and many more . “ We have a great supplier based in Edmonton , when we place orders for antibiotics or prescription drugs they are usually here by the following day ,” mentions Dean . The hospital also acts well as an emergency centre as it has oxygen and x-ray technology on hand with plenty of trained doctors . The hospital also offers exceptional service to cats , as the facility is feline friendly . This means that cats are given their own space in the building where other animals are prohibited to enter . Cat rooms obtain calming pheromones comparable to the secretions of mother cats , which allow cats to feel more relaxed .
Twenty-five years ago , Martensville Veterinary Hospital provided their services to large animals including horses and cattle . In more recent times , services have been extended to strictly small animals such as cats , dogs , birds , snakes , rabbits , iguanas and other lizards , gerbils , guinea pigs , hamsters , ferrets and other exotic animals . The team at the vet hospital are more than confident in tending to the needs of animals of all shapes and sizes . With plenty of services to offer , the vet hospital does well in supplying the best care to patients and people alike . 25 years in business marks a huge milestone , and the hospital has plenty of plans in store for years to come . “ In the years leading from now we ’ d certainly like to keep growing and expanding as we have consistently ”, says Dean . “ I ’ d like to see us stay cutting edge , and adding more skills to the hospital .” It is the goal of Martensville ’ s Veterinary Hospital that every animal have the highest quality of life for as long as it is possible . Community Supports Martensville Free Pantry Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
The Martensville Free Pantry ( MFP ) continues to gain exposure within the community and through this , many local families have been provided with food and supplies that they are in need of . Since first being established in October of last year , the MFP has continued to grow , which enables more families to take advantage of this amazing initiative . “ Statistics are telling us that 50 % of working Canadians are living paycheck to paycheck . We know there are people in our community that need assistance from time to time ,” Martensville Free Pantry founder , Marcy Cross explained . Currently , the MFP is located within the Civic Centre and consists of a shelving unit for items to be stored on , and the newest addition includes a shelf for bread donations . Those in need are able to anonymously take the available items from the pantry .
All items provided are available only through the generosity of others within the community . Numerous individuals , local organizations and businesses have stepped up to contribute to the Free Pantry and through monetary donations from the local Kinsmen and Lions Clubs , Cross is able to ensure there are items available on the shelves for those that need them . The Martensville Co-op Food Store is also providing donations from their bakery to provide for those utilizing the Free Pantry .

Shoppers at the Martensville Co-op can contribute to the Free Pantry by purchasing a package that consists of items such as ; pasta , cereal , juice and soup and other nonperishables . Package prices range from $ 10- $ 20 and can be chosen by shoppers . Co-op prebuilds each package and puts items into ‘ hunger bags ’. “ Shoppers can then choose what they want to spend . They can purchase a package , or they can buy an individual item and donate it . We then put all donations aside for Marcy to come and pick up ,” Martensville Coop Food Store Manager , Jackie Southam explained .
The Martensville grocery store has plans to provide a large bin for all donations to be placed in , similar to what is used within the Saskatoon locations . “ In Saskatoon , we collect donations for the food bank , and here , we can collect donations and keep everything available for local families in need ,” Southam added .
The Martensville Free Pantry is being used daily , and is always in need of more donations . “ This project is for the people of Martensville and couldn ’ t keep going without the support of this amazing community ,” Cross stated . The Super Bowl was nothing less than super once again . Some are saying it was the greatest game of professional football ever played ! It wasn ’ t David vs Goliath but more two high scoring offences ready to battle it out . The Atlanta Falcons had the highest scoring offence in the league and with MVP Matt Ryan at quarterback the team was looking for their first Super Bowl in franchise history in just their second Super Bowl appearance . On the other side was Tom Brady and the Patriots . Brady was looking for his record 5th Super Bowl as a quarterback in his 7th appearance in the big game . The game started out with a 0-0 tie after the first quarter which no one suspected looking at these two high powered offenses .
At halftime it was a different story , The Falcons defence added a pick-six to make the score 21-3 when Lady Gaga took the field . Halfway through the third quarter the Falcons had extended their lead to 28-3 and the Pats were in trouble . New England scored their first touchdown of the game with just over 2 minutes left in the third quarter and if you thought something was finally going right for the Pats well it wasn ’ t . Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed the point after to make the score 28-9 going into the final quarter .
The last quarter held one of the greatest comebacks in sports history . In the Super Bowl , the largest comeback was from a ten point deficit and the Patriots were , at one point , down 25 . An early field goal cut the lead down to 16 . Then Atlanta gave up their first turn over of the playoffs and gave Tom Brady great field position . Brady would go to work and score the touchdown and nail the 2-point convert to make it an 8-point game . With the score 28-20 the Falcons needed a field goal to put the game out of reach with 2 minutes to go . Atlanta was in field goal range on the New England 22-yard line but Pats defensive lineman Trey Flowers sacked Matt Ryan for a 12 yard loss to push them to the limit of Atlanta ’ s kicker . An Atlanta penalty would push them out of field goal range and forced the Falcons to punt . Tom Brady and the Patriots needed to drive 91 yards to tie it and send it to overtime . After a couple first downs the Pats were needing a big play and oh boy did receiver Julian Edelman come through . The 23-yard pass was tipped and three Atlanta defenders dove for the ball along with Edelman . The ball bounced off a defenders leg , into Edelman ’ s hands , rested on a defenders arm and then was finally secured by Edelman before it could touch the ground . The Pats were in business on the Atlanta side of half . The greatest quarterback in the league made no mistakes as he got the touchdown and the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 28 . For the first time in Super Bowl history the game was going into overtime . Now NFL overtime is a little different from the CFL and I don ’ t really like it . The teams flip a coin and the winner gets the ball first , if that team scores a touchdown they win . The only way the team that loses the coin toss has a chance is if the first team can only manage a field goal . Anyway , the Patriots win the coin toss and march down the field to complete the comeback and win the Super Bowl . Tom Brady won his record 5th as a quarterback and Bill Belichick won his record 5th as a coach . Tom Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for a record fourth time after passing for a Super Bowl record 466 yards . Winners of Super Bowl 51 , the New England Patriots .
