Saskatchewan Curling Day

January 25 marked the 3rd annual Curling Day in Saskatchewan . Clubs across the province held open houses and activities for both the avid curlers and those novices that wanted to try the game that is becoming so popular . This is the perfect day to try Saskatchewan ’ s provincial sport especially if you have never tried curling before . Martensville Curling Club hosted their curling day and invited provincial champion Kirk Muyres from Team Laycock to come out and throw rocks with some of the junior curlers on hand . The Laycock rink is sponsored by Cresent Point Energy and Decisive Farming to promote curling to small towns in Saskatchewan and Manitoba . They have done clinics in Verden Manitoba , Whitewood and Livelong so far . After provincials they will also continue their junior tour to Cudworth and Humboldt .
The team is gearing up for the Saskatchewan Men ’ s provincial play downs in Tisdale starting February 25 . Kirk Muyres and the Steve Laycock rink are looking to three-peat as provincial champions in Tisdale . “ I ’ m hoping we play good and we ’ ll let the chips fall where they may ”, commented Muyres . The Tim Horton ’ s Brier is in St . John ’ s Newfoundland in 2017 , which is the hometown for Brad Gushue who earned the right to represent Newfoundland .

Midgets Host First Provincial Game Janine Hayward , Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Midget 2 team hosted the Kerrobert KDL Tigers on Saturday in the first game of the provincial playoffs . Martensville was first to score when Dawson Strunk found the net giving Martensville the 1-0 lead going into the second . Kerrobert tied things up half way through the second and a minute later took a 2-1 lead . Kerrobert had a 4-1 lead going in to the third period . They would add another off the post to make it 5-1 . With only 2:39 left in the game , Jamie Ryan closed the gap to 5-2 which was how the game ended .
The team returns to Kerrobert on Sunday , February 12th with a three point deficit in the two game total point series . Game time is 2:00pm . Go Marauders !
