Royals Celebrate Another Year Tyler Janzen, Martensville Messenger The Martensville Royals High School football team held their annual awards banquet last week at the MHS theatre. The Royals were celebrating their best year of football in school history after bringing home a provincial silver medal three weeks ago in Warman. The Royals had an amazing season right from the first game. The blue and white travelled to Delisle to take on the Rebels under the lights. For the first time in Royals history, MHS left with a victory. From that point on the Royals knew they were in for a great season. Head Coach Lyle Evanisky couldn’t be more proud of his team and even though they may not have had the bigger numbers, they had the determination and will to win that no one could match. The team was led by senior quarterback and Most Valuable Player Ethan Moran who had enough options to keep the defence thinking. Keegan Lussier was the team’s leading rusher and was a huge part of the team’s consistency in getting first downs and keeping the offence on the field. When the Royals needed a big play they never failed to look deep and see Connor McKay wheeling past defenders and making spectacular catches for big yards and big touchdowns. McKay and Lussier shared the Offensive Player of the Year Award. The Special Teams Player of the Year was named to the teams kicker, punter, field goal kicker, kick returner, punt returner, and starting defensive back, Logan Heck, for the second year in a row. Most Inspirational went to defensive lineman Brody Zeigler. Most Dedicated Player went to defensive back Brennan Blevins who stuck it out through a tough season. Blevins got a concussion in a provincial playoff game last year and the effects carried on through this year. He said later that a huge help to him was defensive back coach Shayne Hayward who had also dealt with concussions in his high school football career. Lineman of the year was awarded to Nykola Dovgyy. Senior player Defensive Lineman Dylan Gutek was named Defensive Player of the Year. Second year player Austin Claypool was named Most Improved Player of the Year. Senior player Aubrey Murray was named Rookie of the Year. Looking ahead to next year the Royals may be in trouble for numbers as 13 players are graduating this year.
