Progress Continues on Saskatoon’s NorthShanine Commuter Parkway Sealey, Martensville Messenger With the mild weather that Saskatoon and area has been fortunate enough to have this year, work on North Commuter Parkway Bridge in Saskatoon is moving along at a rapid pace. Motorists will have to wait until the expected completion date of October 2018 before taking advantage of the new connection between Saskatoon’s north end and the University Heights area of the city. The project began last year, and is located near the intersection of Wanuskewin Road and Marquis Drive and will connect with McOrmond Road. Once complete, the bridge is expected to be utilized by 14,600 to 21,700 vehicles each day when it first opens and up to 40,000 vehicles once Saskatoon’s population hits 300,000. With the amount of people taking advantage of the new bridge, it is expected to alleviate traffic from other areas within Saskatoon, especially the Circle Drive North Bridge. Workers are able to build the 400 metre bridge using berms, created from rocks and dirt in the river. Construction on the first pier of the bridge is now complete, with the second pier nearing completion and construction on the third and fourth piers expected to begin in the spring. Representatives from the City of Saskatoon expect that the first of four spans of the new bridge will be built this spring, with workers continuing construction throughout the winter months. The bridge will be comprised of three piers with a total of four spans and will have a six-lane roadway, with pedestrian and cyclist accessibility included. The North Commuter is part of the City of Saskatoon’s Bridging to Tomorrow project, and once complete will mark the second tallest bridge in Saskatoon, coming in at 21.6 metres above the river. This project also includes the new Traffic Bridge in downtown Saskatoon, which is also expected to be complete in October 2018. The Bridging to Tomorrow project is currently the most expensive infrastructure project to take place in Saskatoon, with plans to have the bridges built and maintained for 30 years for $497.7 million.
