Ciara O ’ Reilly , Martensville Messenger
The famous dessert theatre of Martensville High School is set for production for the public eye on February 2nd , 3rd , and 4th . This year Micah Robinson , writer and director , sought the perfect cast to put on a performance regarding the mysterious life and times of Edgar Allan Poe . Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer , editor , and literary critic . Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories , particularly his tales of mystery and horror . He is often portrayed as the central figure for Romanticism in the United States , and is also generally known for the ‘ invention ’ of Detective Fiction . Poe was among the first in the country to practice short stories and is widely known for his contribution to the emerging genre of Science Fiction . Not only were the writings of Poe fluent in horror and mystery , but his life proved to also be just as morbidly mysterious right up until his death . “ A lot of people know of Edgar Allan Poe and his stories but know little about how fascinating his life was ,” says Robinson . Written by the artistic hand of Micah Robinson , the Theatre Arts class of MHS hopes to capture exactly that during their future performances . The Commercial 20 and 30 classes will be supplying desserts in bounty during the production .
The MHS production of POE thrives in originality , morbidity , suspense and horror alike . Starring Myles Eagle , Brennan Blevins , Cassidy Funk , and featuring many other big names of MHS , this show is a must see . Visualize each of three famous stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life at the moment of creation - as he is hunched over a desk during the mid-1800 ’ s . Stories include ‘ The Raven ’, ‘ Tell-Tale Heart ’, and ‘ The Fall of the House of Russia ’. The performance will thus bounce between the reallife happenings between that of Poe and his stories , to an extent at which one will begin to wonder what is real and what is fiction . The entire production will be themed in black and white in order to capture the times and add to the morbidity of the already morose affairs . Costumes and settings are being made from scratch , all of which will also be fitting the black and white theme . The Theatre Art ’ s class has poured themselves into the production , in fact preparations began last June and practices began in early September . The set is already coming alive and the amount of work being put forth by the class is apparent . A big Victorian clock is in the midst of creation as it graces centre stage , and a handcrafted stage sits upon the amphitheatre awaiting the resurrection of the life of Edgar Allan Poe . The entire screening of this production consists of the original works of MHS ; from the writings of Robinson , to the music and score created by his brother , Jared Robinson , to the costumes , backdrops and setting created by that of the Theatre Art ’ s students . Come and watch as Poe ’ s life unfolds from his birth and the accompanying abandonment of his parents , to his peculiar marriage with his first cousin at the age of 27 and she the tender age of 13 , to his untimely and unusual death at which the cause remains a mystery to this very day .
The Theatre Arts class is truly flourishing in the new amphitheatre which will soon prove successful in taking MHS ’ s famous Dessert Theatre to new heights .
