As the cold fronts start to drop water temperatures , many fish start to follow the baitfish to the " inside ." The first full moon in September usually starts the transition , but the cold temps really get things underway for fall fishing . It was plain as day the last full moon was a major factor in the fish ’ s behavior of moving further into inland waters . As soon as the full moon passed , we immediately started catching more trout and keeper reds than before it came . The trout will usually start off as barely keepers , but as the temps drop , the bigger ones will steadily get better .

The outside pockets and bays around the outer edges of Venice will produce good fish when you can find good water this month . All of the bays in Buras with clean water will be productive as well . More often than not , a popping cork with an 18 inch leader works best . If you want to keep it sporting , use a soft plastic on a 1 / 4 ounce jighead . Historically , it ' s hard to beat purple and chartreuse or black and chartreuse , but I ' ve recently starting throwing some lemon heads by Matrix Shad , and they are impressive too ! For the hard-core meat guys , a popping cork with an 18 inch , 20 pound fluorocarbon leader , along with a split shot and treble hook is like putting out a gill net . If the fish are remotely hungry , they will not pass it up .
In Venice , the trout and redfish will likely gang up in the same places within reason . The difference is the reds like staying closer to the canes . The trout will hang on points with slow moving tide , but will also hang out way off the

THAN YOU THINK ! canes . Garden Island Bay and Blind Bay are probably two of the best producers of trout these days in Venice . Don ' t ever pass up South Pass Jetty if you want to try for a trophy trout ! A 3 / 8 ounce jig with an eel style plastic or a queen cocahoe work great . You might try the new Mann ’ s Reel ‘ N Shad as they are working wonders too . Spinner baits , weedless spoons , Gulp , and dead shrimp will all do their fair share of damage on the redfish . Southwest Pass , Joseph Bayou , and South Pass areas will all be prime spots for reds . If the weather gets decent , you can also catch tripletail at the shallower rigs in the Sandy Point and West Bay areas . Gulp or live shrimp work best , 6 to 10 feet down . A slip cork or just pitching will do the trick . The bull reds will be thick all over the beaches and outer bays from Empire to Southwest Pass . Look for movement and / or lots of bait to clue you in as to where to start fishing . The number one method for catching the big ones is to use a popping cork with a deep cup to make lots of noise . I prefer an 80 pound monofilament leader 18 to 24 inches long with a 1 / 4 jighead and a large soft plastic . Pop it very hard then let it sit for three to five seconds motionless . Then repeat . Enjoy the great weather and fishing !
