Throughout March, it seemed like American Urban Radio Networks’ April D. Ryan was in the news every time I turned around. The PUBLISHER’S Pen As I’m sure most of you know, Ms. Ryan is a White House Correspondent. In fact, she’s been in that role for twenty years. Well, we’re in the month of April now. So, I decided to bounce this question off a few of my friends in the media to see what their thoughts were on the sudden spotlight: “How does a journalist main- tain his/her integrity and equilibrium as all those years grinding in the Nation’s Capital garners more and more national attention, courtesy of the White House?” The consensus is that a true journalist never wants to be THE story. What I want to know is where are all the Congressional Black Caucus leadership while Ms. Ryan tangles with the Trump administration week in and week out? In fact, I recently saw Ms. Ryan moderating a live panel on race relations from Charlottesville. It was via C-Span BookTV. (You know the room was filled with folks that didn’t look like me.) And, the three white men discussing their new books certainly didn’t look like me. Or, even United States Senator Cory Booker, for that matter. I don’t know about you. But, don’t you find it odd that the current crop of Black male leadership is content with allowing a 78-year old U.S. Congresswoman from California to stand toe-to-toe with a sitting President of the United States of America? Unassisted? Yet, you wonder why half the time you cain’t tell if it’s a man or a woman heading your way. I guess that’s what respectability politics has become.
