What are your passions and motivations ?
That ’ s easy ; my daughter , coffee , chocolate and wine ! I have worked as a midwife and maternity nurse before changing career paths to follow my interest of music and performing arts . I have loved promoting the arts in our community and feel privileged to have been able to follow both passions in my career , the Marlborough Magazine is another exciting step .
What interested you in being part of the Marlborough Magazine team ?
I have read this & that for years and worked with Summa on various aspects of arts promotion . I ' m honoured to be part of a vibrant team , full of positive energy , working towards a common goal ; to capture the spirit and successes in our small town , in print . As the mother of a nine-year-old daughter , I love working with a group of women who share a family-focused philosophy with the same core values . I ' m excited to be part of the re-brand process , having read endless house and garden and lifestyle magazines , I still have to pinch myself when I realise I now do this for a job !
What is something people might not know about you ?
I am a strong advocate for Organ Donation New Zealand and the New Zealand Heart and Lung Transplant Service . In 2013 , the indescribable generosity of a donor family and the resulting double lung transplant surgery , saved my life . Since then , I have taken every opportunity to give thanks and raise awareness of organ donation . I am a spokesperson for Organ Donation New Zealand , a representative of the 2019 campaign and will be involved both locally and nationally in this year ’ s Thank You Day .
What do you love most about Marlborough ?
Marlborough is a wonderful place to raise a family . It has everything you need in a nutshell ! Easy access to beaches , boating , lakes and mountains . The fact that it only takes a matter of minutes to get anywhere ( with no traffic ) means that connecting with family and friends is easy . After spending hours driving around ‘ post-quake ’ Christchurch and other large cities , the ease and pace of life in Marlborough is refreshing and good for the soul .
Kat Pickford & Elsie
Kat Pickford - Writer
Kia Ora , I ’ m Kat Pickford , a contributing writer for the Marlborough Magazine .
I ’ ve been on board with Summa and the team for almost a year now . As a mum to almost-two-year-old , Elsie , the monthly deadline and flexible hours suit my lifestyle perfectly .
I ’ ve always enjoyed reading and writing but it wasn ’ t until I moved to Blenheim with my partner Mike Douglas eight years ago that I started making a living out of it . Prior to that I ’ d worked in the adventure tourism industry - working with youth at risk , driving buses up ski fields in Queenstown and Methven and guiding on the Milford Track .
The best part about writing for the Marlborough Mag is the opportunity to meet so many passionate , talented people and hear about the journeys that have lead them to do and create amazing things .
When I sit down to write , the challenge is conveying their stories in an accurate and compelling way - I hope you enjoy the result .
