HOUSE & GARDEN This quintessential Marlborough Sounds property was transformed into a spectacular permanent home with the foresight and skill of Andrew Lawson of Lawson Homes and Architectural Designer, Mark Hawkins. Once a quirky mix of 1970’s charm, this rejuvenated Queen Charlotte Sound property now sits proudly on a majestic site deserving of such a build. and pole structure not only ruled out unnecessary complications but also saved considerable time and expense, all while fulfilling the brief to improve the layout to maximise the views and completely modernise the home. This stunning renovation, which took out the top award in the 2013 Nelson/ Marlborough ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards, was ignited and carried out by Lawson Homes over the course of 10 months. The only extension to the house is a new garage area to the west. The remainder of the build rests on the existing footprint. Reconstruction of the lower guest wing involved a slight layout change and a total refurbishment. The upper level was removed resulting in a complete redesign and rebuild. The brief from the client to both builder and designer was simple: to create a modern home that takes full advantage of the incredible views and blends in to the natural environment. Although the foundation and sub-floor remained, the renovation and rebuild was extensive. Carrying out such a project on a site with an extremely steep gr adient proved a rewarding challenge for Andrew and his team. Each aspect of the build and fit-out had to be meticulously planned taking in to consideration both timing and access. Materials were delivered in small loads at precise increments, dependent on the progress and stage of the build. A separate parking deck was created to A combination of factors led to the decision to opt for a renovation over a complete rebuild. The site had a feast of attributes with easy road access (a mere 5-minute drive from Waikawa) and privacy from all aspects; however, the existing dwelling took no advantage of the spectacular outlook.
