Today, the "tech talk" has replaced the "sex talk" of yesterday. The FBI has reported that the possibilities of child exploitation has expanded exponentially. Preadators are able to mask their identity by appealing to kids before they are developmentally able to think critically about who they are interracting with.
Parents and educators are overwhelmed by technology and tools that are complex and hard to understand. And, everything changes every day to keep up with preadators and others who have considerable time and resources to spend in this direction. Statistics show that 3 out of 4 teenagers say they've been bullied online, but only 1 in 10 tells their parents.
With 42% of children between the ages of 3-11 using the internet, we must provide an environment that is truly safe and secure as we would with any other environment. Restriction of the internet is not the answer. 21st centry skills require that kids are proficient, even expert, at using technology, collaborating, and navigating in this world. It's time that we guide them by taking charge of the process.
