This year proved to be quite an exciting year for the boys . We are now settled into the House system and see a lot of enthusiasm expressed by the boys for both the inter-house competitions and the mentor sessions .
The calibre of boys in the House fortifies the fact that at College , and in particular in Nicholson House , we are producing fine young gentlemen . The respect shown and the manners displayed by our boys make us proud to be part of Nicholson ’ s . We have seen these qualities rapidly passed onto the newer boys as they begin their journey at College . I must give credit to the six prefects , namely C Reed , M Meugens , M Welch , J Kriel , N Odendaal and C Glover , the Head Prefect , who , together with the House Leaders , did a sterling job in inculcating good moral values in the boys . Their efforts have allowed the boys to develop into young men with confidence and influence .
On the academic front , Nicholson boys regularly featured in the top ten of their form . We have every confidence that these boys will continue their show of brilliance as they continue with their studies . Many of our boys also excelled in the cultural sphere and on the sports fields . We congratulate all the boys who received academic , sport and cultural awards ( listed elsewhere in the magazine ).
Our performance in the inter-house competitions has not been what we expected , however , it is heart-warming to see the boys fight to the end . Dropping three positions from 2015 to sixth place in 2016 was disappointing . We have already put plans in place for 2017 to achieve higher results . I must congratulate every boy who either participated or supported our teams .
It is a welcome sign to see boys develop in confidence and come into their own at College . This is because of the camaraderie the boys enjoy . Well done to all boys that have achieved their goals . This is always going to be a work in progress . Continue to raise the bar , not only for yourselves but also for this great institution , College .
Finally I take this opportunity to thank all the Mentors and Assistant Housemaster , Mr Robberts , for the sacrifices they made to ensure the smooth and effective running of our House . Their commitment to the programme made my task much easier . I watched with a quiet assurance and satisfaction as they guided boys through some of the more difficult aspects of schooling . The success of their mentor lessons is seen in the transformation of our boys from being ordinary boys to extraordinary boys . Well done to each one of them .

I believe that the fifth Headmaster of College , Mr Septimus Pape ( 1926-1937 ), would have been very proud of the way the young men carried themselves this year .
With a great team of staff members and House leaders , we were able to maintain a good level of discipline and team spirit this year . We would like to welcome Mr Robin Jones to our fold as he replaced Mr Larter who will be undertaking other responsibilities . The team would like to thank Mr Larter for his valuable input to the House while he was here , and wish him all the strength he will need for his future duties .
For most of the year we were again knocking at the door to be on the top of the leader board , however , we were again pipped in the final rounds and were placed in joint fourth position – the same placing that we achieved in 2015 .
The feedback from Mentor and House Leaders was again positive this year . The pupils have now settled into the House system , and are starting to contribute more towards the many facets of the system . We have encouraged the entire Fifth Form group to take ownership of the House and its events and take the initiative to arrange for tutors and create new traditions by which the House may be recognised in years to come .
The House Leaders now form their own line up at assemblies and have their own announcements . There seems to be a sense of pride amongst them which I believe is very healthy . The staff team will be there to keep an eye on all events without taking control and killing the good spirit that presently prevails . At the end of the day , the house does belong to the boys and they do need to take ownership .
Finally , we bid farewell to Mrs Liz Leroy as the Leroy family will be leaving College . She has had a great impact on the staff and boys alike and will be sorely missed . We wish them God ’ s richest blessings for their future . Special thanks to the team of Mentors for all their hard work and dedication during 2016 . Without your hard work and support , the boys would be a lot poorer . Thanks for a wonderful year .
