Fuller House is named after Mr Raymond ‘Bones’
Fuller. Mr Fuller was College’s first South African
born Headmaster and the first Old Collegian to fill the
position. The Fuller quote, still treasured by many old
and new Collegians, was part of an address made
by Mr Fuller:
“But there are certain things that do not change and
must not change. The basic human values of truth,
courage, kindness and manliness, for which this
school has stood, will be just as important in the future as they have been
in the past, and it is the duty of those of us who love this school to see that
its noble traditions remain unchanged.”
Fuller House, along with the rest of College, hit the ground running in 2016.
Although not as successful as last year, the boys were always ready and
willing to get involved in the various aspects of the inter-house competition.
We had participation across all aspects of the competition and many boys
took part in events in which they would not normally have participated. As
always, the staff of Fuller House were supportive, involved and helpful. It is
a pleasure to work with dedicated and caring teachers.
The House Leaders have acquitted themselves well this year. They were
key in rallying boys to get involved and they also led by example in many
facets. We thank them for their dedication and contribution to Fuller House.
The running of Fuller House continues in a generally smooth manner. The
mentorship programm e is well established and is fulfilling the intended role
in the life of the College boys. The mentor teachers are sincerely thanked
for their efforts in making sure that mentoring takes place and adds value
to the programme.
At the end of 2016 we said goodbye to Mrs Jeary who has been a
dedicated Assistant Housemaster. She played a vital role in the House and
much of the success of Fuller House can be attributed to her. She has been
a constant source of support and encouragement, and her quiet but firm
demeanour set a wonderful example to the boys, peers and staff. We wish
her all the best at St John’s DSG. Mrs B Borain will be taking up the position
vacated by Mrs Jeary. We welcome her and wish her well for the future.
Mrs Finnie also leaves Fuller House, not to another school but on promotion
to the post of Deputy Headmaster: Academics. Mrs Finnie’s fantastic
mentorship and role in the mentoring of College boys has been immense.
She has a great rapport with the boys and is able to make her mentor
lessons inspiring and worthwhile. Her involvement in Fuller House will be
missed.

Lamond House is named after famed Old Collegian
Housemaster, Sholto Erroll Lamond, who had a 49-
year association with the school. He arrived at College
as a young schoolboy in 1902, the same year as Mr
EW Barns, and remained as a student when the Natal
University College was housed in the wood and iron
building situated in College’s grounds. He was Dux of
College in 1908 and 1909 and, apart from a short
break at DHS in 1926-1927 (his ‘locust years’ as he
called them), he taught at the school until his retirement
in 1950. In short, Mr Lamond was a member of the staff from 1911 until
1950 and was vice-principal from 1924-1950.
Lamond’s is indeed blessed to have mentors, Mrs Marchant, Mrs Borain
and Messrs Dutton, Mbontsi and Smit, who played a pivotal role in the
92
successful year of the House. We took leave of Mr Joe Morgan, our
Assistant Housemaster, who took up a teaching post in Kenya in August.
We thank him for all his hard work and wish him and his wife all of the
very best. Congratulations to Mr Dutton who was promoted to Assistant
Housemaster of Lamond’s. We welcomed Miss Sarah Akerman who joined
Lamond House as a mentor in August. Mrs Borain has been appointed
as Assistant Housemaster in Fuller House from 2017. She was a caring
mentor who placed the interest of her pupils above all else. We will miss
her. Our loss is most definitely Fuller’s gain and we wish her well.
As always the young men from Lamond’s approached the inter-house
competitions with enthusiasm. We did not get off to a good start but slowly
and surely climbed from ninth position to third place at the end of the year.
Lamond boys were involved in all spheres of the co-curricular programme
at College, whether cultural or sporting activities. Quite a number of our
boys were selected for various representative teams and we are very proud
of them.
We were extremely blessed to have T Madlala as our House captain and
he led by example. Assistant House captain, C Hope, and House Leaders,
R de Wet, M Dicks, A Khan, A Landman and B Mackenzie did a sterling
job in organising and motivating the boys whilst participating in the various
inter-house activities.
We look forward to an outstanding 2017.
Miss A Greyling
