HOUSE REPORTS Barns House Housemaster: Mr K Emerson / Mrs M-A Rembold (from August 2016) Assistant Housemaster: Mr G Jelley Mentors: Mr G Barrable, Ms A Phillips, Mrs L Akerman, Mrs D Gademan and Mr L Shezi House captain: F Manke House leaders: A Scott, D Blunt, M Wolhuter, M Mbambo, C Smith Our House motto – Acta non verba – means ‘Actions not words’. This is the motto we encourage Barns’ boys to live by. They need to take responsibility for their actions and we encourage them to be courteous, selfless young men who show respect for their fellow man. We take this opportunity to thank Mr Emerson for his excellent leadership of Barns House for the past three years. He led with passion and empathy and has established an excellent foundation on which to build. My heartfelt thanks also go to the mentors for their input into the lives of the boys. Their role is both crucial and pivotal in the pastoral care of our young men. Their support of the Housemaster is also much appreciated and their guidance has been invaluable. F Manke, the House Captain, is a true leader. He is a servant-leader and has led by example and with humility. He is responsible and dedicated in all spheres of his life. As a result, he was well-respected and highly regarded. Barns House finished in eighth position in the inter-house competition this year. The lack of participation in the big House events seems to have been the major contributor to this outcome. The Housemaster, Mentors and House Leaders will need to think creatively and act proactively to ensure greater success in 2017. On a positive note, however, the House spirit has been excellent in 2016. In terms of our achievements in 2016, several of our teams did us proud – the tennis, chess and water polo teams were placed third and our cricket team was placed second overall. Our real stars, however, were the canoeing boys who came first in the inter-house competition. Well done gentlemen! Mrs M-A Rembold Calder House Housemaster: Mr G Erasmus Assistant Housemaster: Mr T Orchard Mentors: Mr C Lang, Mrs E Fraser, Mr M Ngcobo, Mrs J Orchard and Mrs P Lowe House captain: C Mpanza House leaders: G Easton, S Swift, S Mahlati, M Daniel, Z Seegers Three years into the House system it is heartening to recognise familiar faces every day and enjoy the interactions from relationships we have cultivated. Our House Captain, C Mpanza, has fulfilled his duties with purpose and dignity. We were very fortunate to have a young man of his calibre to lead our House. Our Sixth Formers of 2016 certainly made the most of every moment, making and taking in those special moments on Goldstone’s on a Saturday. These are the memories that they will one day share with fellow Old Collegians and their own sons. For our Second Formers, the worst is finally over and they are now ‘real College boys’. They have proven themselves and we proudly salute them 90 as fellow Collegians. The road ahead will be easier and they will begin to reap the fruit of their blood, sweat and tears. We are excited and amazed by the tremendous potential that these boys have already exhibited. They are described as strong characters with good morals. We encourage them to involve themselves in the various co-curricular aspects of the school. It is the best way to make friends and prove to others exactly what they have in the marrow of their thin little bones. Hearty congratulations to those boys who have met or surpassed their goals for the year. The hard work has paid off and it is time to enjoy the rewards of their excellence. However, resting on one’s laurels is never a good idea as the path to brilliance is littered with the hopes and dreams of those that have done so. We wish our Sixth Formers well for the journey of life that is unfolding before them and we hope that they will make use of the sound platform that Maritzburg College has provided. We thank them sincerely for their guidance and efforts behind the scenes. Finally, I extend sincere and special thanks to all the House staff for their superb efforts and efficiency throughout this year. Their endless understanding, support and willingness to assist are recognised and very much appreciated. Without their dedication and service, our efforts would be in vain. Mr G Erasmus
