Maritzburg College Mind Sports has seen a meteoric rise this year , growing from a relative new-comer in the virtual arena , to being one of the top contenders in all disciplines . The College ‘ DOTA 2 ’ team ( DOTA is an online computer game involving multiple players ) has been ranked as the top school team in the country , boasting an undefeated season of 10 official games and 10 wins ( this includes two provincial championships and a national championship ). Notably , the ‘ DOTA 2 ’ 1st team also went unbeaten in all unofficial matches during the year . In addition to the immense success of the ‘ DOTA 2 ’ team , College was also represented by a relatively young and inexperienced ‘ Counter-Strike ’ team . While their 2016 results may not have placed them in any major tournaments , they show great promise for the future .
The Mind Sports club , in conjunction with the TechSquad society , hosted Maritzburg College ’ s first gaming event , College Arcade Night ( CAN ). The CAN was seen as an overall success , drawing over 300 spectators and gamers to the event . Funds raised at the CAN were used to assist the DOTA 1st team to participate in the National Team Trials in Johannesburg , a first for College . The team earned its invitation by winning a provincial championship . It was stimulating to network with league organisers , gamers , and officials and the experience was both interesting and informative . S Naicker was named

This year the members of the Maritzburg College Muslim Students Association ( MCMSA ) have focussed their efforts on finding an organisation to which we can make a difference . The committee felt that in order to make an impact our undivided attention needed to be given to one organisation . At the beginning of the year we agreed on an organisation called the Greater Edendale Muslim Society ( GEMS ). We had three main objectives to complete during Phase One .
the South African Protea Captain for the 2016 / 2017 season , a well-earned and proud achievement for a Maritzburg College Sixth Former .
In July , Maritzburg College hosted the Mind Sports SA 22nd Annual KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Championships . This was yet another first for both the TechSquad and College . The event , which attracted seven clubs from four provinces , went off very well . Congratulations go to G Haripersad ( Checkers , FIFA ‘ 16™ , PES 2016™ , TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT II™ ) and M Hoyle ( HearthStone ) who earned KwaZulu-Natal Colours in their respective gaming titles . We would also like to acknowledge C Gold ( FIFA ‘ 16 ) and J Botha ( PES 2016 ) for winning in the High School Division . The event was attended by a number of MSSA officials including the General Secretary , Mr Colin Webster . The support and guidance freely given by the MSSA officials was highly appreciated . We acknowledge and thank all who assisted and supported Mind Sports in 2016 . We express our gratitude to the boys for their dedication to the society under the leadership of S Naicker . We are particularly appreciative of the ongoing support and assistance of Messrs C Luman , J Maistry , G Bennetts , S Peach and R Tooms .

The first idea was a trip for the committee to the 16 crèches across Edendale which are run by GEMS . This mission was successful . In the First term over 14 MCMSA members went on a trip to Edendale and stopped at each crèche where we handed out an apple , a packet of chips and a bottle of juice for each child . We had a chance to spend time with the children as well as view the crèches and the work being done by teachers within . After observing the condition of the crèches and how they were being run , the group decided that GEMS needed funding for the maintenance of the crèches . This gave rise to the idea of hosting a soccer tournament . In August , the Fifth Form members of the MCMSA hosted a soccer tournament for U16 and U19 age groups on Lamond ’ s and Leaches . The tournament was a major success and the committee raised an amount of R12 663 . This money was then given to GEMS and is currently being used for the maintenance of their crèches .
The last step of phase one will be run by the Third and Fourth Form students from the MCMSA in the first term of 2017 . The aim is to place 288 collection tins across Pietermaritzburg . Another activity undertaken by the MCMSA was performing at the Hindu Society evening , as well as donating R500 towards the roses for CANSA . These good works carried out by the boys have taught us nothing less than good values and appreciation for what we have . The year was an overall success and the MCMSA hopes to keep up the good work it has managed to complete this year .
