MC Ink is College’s creative writing group. This year the members decided
to elect group leaders. R ‘Blackjack’ Murdoch-Oats was elected captain,
with W ‘Kreature’ Ndlovu the vice-captain. They were able to add further
motivation to the group.
The MC Ink boys have continued to turn in great work, whether it be poetry,
prose or even cartoons. We still try to nurture their growth and provide
stimulation for writing with thoughtful discussions, or inspiring videos.
We had two boys enter the Poetry4Life poetry recital competition, K Chetty
and G Haripersad. They made it to the regional finals and performed
really well. Chetty was unfortunate not to be placed in the national
finals. Nonetheless, it was a worthwhile experience upon which we can
build. P Phala in Third Form participated in the school’s performing arts
competition. All three are commended for their enthusiasm and willingness
to compete.
We have had some really strong poems being recited during Monday
assemblies, and the boys often volunteer for this duty weeks ahead of time.
Our poems are also published in the College Newsletter.

#fees must fall... Monsters within
Yes, fees must fall, not buildings. The same buildings that turn us from
cocoon to butterfly, the same structures that make, mould and shape a
better future and generation for our distorted nation...
Fees must fall
But not the rainbow nation, not the structures that made us black, white
coloured, indian, one nation,
that made us a free generation, born free, but not to make the previously
disadvantaged to have advantage, and vice versa.
Fees must fall
And so should violent protests that scar our nation and make the world
look at us like a hooligan nation. Steve Biko lived and died for peaceful
confrontation, and why can’t we?
Nelson Mandela walked the long walk to freedom, but he said it wasn’t
finished. He gave us the baton to run our race, and it’s not about winning
the race, but about finishing the race together as one people.
Fees must fall
And fees will fall, in due time.
Fees must fall
And so should the mind-set racial segregation and discrimination,
Fees must fall and so should our egos as we all sit here pretending its all
good as the good old country becomes no good.
Fees must fall,
And our integrity should rise.
Fees would have never had to fall if people did their part. What part have
you played in healing our dreadful nation? When children we thought monsters lurked under the bed
And our parents said that it’s all in our head
And what our parents said, it’s true
And as we slowly grew
We found ourselves fighting with monsters within
Monsters hide as weaknesses, fears
We know they are there, though we try to deny it
Grown men try their hardest to hide it
The violent monster pushing them to tears
Monsters can haunt the strongest of soldiers
As they fight with that massive weight on their shoulders
And even though they know they can go no more
They continue to go as their monsters continue to grow
And everybody, far and near
Has a monster, has a fear
And though it may be small
Try ignore that monster’s call
Saying you’re weak, you’re not good enough
And though it’s hard, and though it’s tough
You must never ever give up
The fight with the monsters within.
