The year 2016 has seen the Interact Club stabilise with about 50 active members . The large group of altruistic Sixth Formers have been exceptionally strong , led by S Mntungwa , and they have been an inspiration to the rest of the members . Throughout the year the pupils visited Northdale Hospital and the Salvation Army . The trips to Northdale involved the pupils helping out in the pharmacy by labelling drugs for dispensing . The pupils that visited the Salvation Army would interact with the boys ranging from four to 18-years old , as well as nurturing the babies in the nursery .
During the first and second terms , for about eight weeks , 30 Grade Four pupils from a school in Edendale came to College to be assisted in remedial tuition . The pupils learnt basic skills on the computers , arithmetic and speaking English . This was unfortunately not sustainable because academic apps need to be purchased .
The real stalwarts gave up valuable study time during the June exams to help with the Dusi2C . These boys spent a very chilly night at Mfula to assist the 650 cyclists by carrying heavy kit boxes to and from their tents . Various collections were undertaken including : chocolate hearts being sold to raise funds for CHOC on Valentine ’ s Day , boys donated money to buy Easter eggs and Hot X Buns which were given to Sunnyside Old Age Home as well as the Salvation Army Children ’ s Home , and roses were sold as a fundraiser for CANSA .
The variety of activities that the Interactors helped at included an Azalea Rotary Club quiz evening , marshalling at the Interschool Cross Country event at Mondi in Hilton , cooking at Kwela ’ s Hut to assist the rugby fundraising and ushering at the drama production , All Shook Up . Fifth Formers , O Majoro and T Magubane , were sponsored by the Azalea Rotary Club to attend a leadership course at Port Shepstone for the duration of the October holiday .
In all it has been a fairly active year for all the members who gave willingly of their time and opened their hearts to others . It is no surprise that from this year ’ s Fifth Formers , five boys will be 2017 prefects and five will be House Leaders . I thank all the Interactors for being such a dynamic group and congratulate T Burton for being selected as the 2017 Interact Leader .
