The Hindu Society had a positive and successful year and the group has
grown substantially in numbers. The boys attended the regular Tuesday
meetings with enthusiasm and responded well to both the discourses
presented by their peers and visits by outside speakers. We were invited
to participate in a Cultural Evening organised by the GHS Hindu Society.
The boys performed a song item which was a resounding success. Grateful
thanks are extended to parents who assisted with fundraising by teaming
up with the organisers of the Dusi2C event. They assisted with the shuttle
service which required them to drive cars down to Durban.
The society has also contributed to the water drive for the drought
stricken areas of KwaZulu-Natal as part of our outreach objectives. We
have partnered with Phelezela, an outreach organisation helping poor
communities in the Umgungundlovu district. In May the society assisted
with the organisation at a medical camp in Imbali where the community
benefited from free medical service from volunteer doctors and nurses. In
July the society assisted Phelezela as part of their winter warmth project in
handing out jerseys to primary schools that have indigent and impoverished
pupils.
The society organised a cultural evening, Unity in Diversity, in October
2016. The Muslim Society and College for Christ participated in the
programme which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Third and Fourth
Formers performed in Conversations with God, which was a short play
written and directed by Mrs K Thaver for the Hindu Society. Through this the
cast attempted to interpret some of the teachings of scripture. Fundamental
questions were posed to the Lord and answers were given in a simplified
manner to help us understand what is expected of us as we journey through
life. The evening also paid tribute to Tash Sewnarain and Mr Bridglall who
had passed on earlier in the year. Tash was our first Hindu Society leader
who was inspirational and instilled in the boys a passion for their culture.
Mr Bridglall was the father of S Bridglall who rendered a most poignant
tribute to his late dad. The evening was also successful in raising money
which will be donated to a charity identified by the boys. This forms part
of the outreach objectives to which they committed themselves in 2015.
