Maritzburg College hosted its inaugural Afrikaans theatre production in
August. Written and directed by Mrs Gerda Talke, Sterland is ons Shangri-
la was about two groups of boys (jocks and arties) that were clashing; and
how, in the end, they become a brotherhood. The stories were interspersed
with popular Afrikaans songs.
Although it was a very busy time in the school’s calendar, the cast practised
hard and put on a great performance to the delight of the many people
who attended. The band, a group of the younger boys, also did extremely
well under the leadership of Mr Gerhard Erasmus. We were very proud of
the boys, many of whom are not Afrikaans speaking. Thanks to Mrs Gertie
Landsberg and S Bridglall who worked out all the chords for the music.
The society also participated in some of the Afrikaanse Taal Kultuur
Vereniging (ATKV) competitions for poetry and writing.

The AV society has had a rebirth of sorts with the investment by the school
in the Olivier Cultural Centre. With a new lighting rig and updated sound
system the AV crew was ready to take on the challenge of the school
musical production, All Shook Up. They handled this with aplomb, doing
both sound and lighting at a professional level. This gave the society new
vigour and a desire to learn. Besides the regular day-to-day events of the
60
AV Society, they have also been involved in the Afrikaans production, the
College Actors’ Workshop talent competition, as well as various training
days for the boys to upskill themselves. One of the goals of the AV Society at
the moment is to offer the boys training to enable them to be independent.
We look forward to the coming year and the new challenges it will bring.
