‘The Movement’, also known as ‘FUNK’, has grown from strength to
strength this year. Drawing from one of Nina Simone’s assertions that,
fundamentally, the artist’s duty is to reflect the times in which they live, ‘The
Movement’ created Trans, a thought provoking dance theatre piece about
the transitory nature of the human experience. Preceding the piece was
Jason Silva’s claim that, “human beings are attracted to novelty: to probe
the ‘adjacent possible.’ We didn’t stay in the caves. We didn’t stay on the
planet, and soon we won’t stay within the limitations of our biology. We
move forward. We transcend our limits. We go to the moon, and we create
the Internet.” Using car tyres symbolically, eight boys, led by the troupe’s
captain, O Majoro, performed the piece at various platforms such as
‘FUNK’, ExperiDance, Dance@Kearsney, and Jomba Youth Fringe Festival.

All Shook Up
In May, Maritzburg College, in association with Pietermaritzburg Girls’
High, presented the musical, All Shook Up. Written by Joe DiPietro, it is
based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The cast comprised a talented
group of young men and women who performed to sold-out audiences. The
score featured Elvis Presley’s songs which kept the audience’s feet tapping

to classics such as Jailhouse Rock, Blue Suede Shoes and the title song,
All Shook Up. The production was directed by Mrs Kamany Thaver with
musical direction by Mr Simon Stickells and choreography by Mr Bonwa
Mbontsi.
