OUTREACH
KHANYISA OUTREACH PROGRAMME of Mathematics , Physical Science and Accounting . In all , therefore , this outreach programme has been going for the past seven years , having started originally , in its first year , with Mathematics only , and then moving on to include the other two subject areas .
Teachers attend the ‘ lessons ’ at Maritzburg College for approximately four hours every fortnight , and in these sessions they are given guidance and support by Mr David Maistry ( Maths ), Mrs Mary-Ann Rembold ( Physical Science ) and Mrs Janine Jeary ( Accounting ). On Saturdays the pupils from these schools attend revision sessions – we pick up these pupils at the start of their Grade 11 year , and see them through to the end of Grade 12 . The sessions are very well attended , and it is wonderful to see the increase in confidence that these pupils exhibit .
H Moodley assists pupils at a Saturday session of Khanyisa . Our Khanyisa tutors provide valuable assistance to both staff and pupils alike .
The year 2016 saw this project reach the end of its third two-year programme whereby we support a selection of schools in the Umgungundlovu district , as well as their Grade 11 and 12 pupils , in the subject areas
The teachers at the Saturday sessions , Ann McLoughlin , Mary-Ann Rembold and Janine Jeary , are assisted by Grade 11 and 12 College boys , the Khanyisa peer tutors . These boys assist in answering questions ( the groups are very large ), issuing notes , and packing the lunch packs organised by Mrs Vicky Chedie , whose enthusiastic commitment to the administration of the programme cannot be faulted .
At the end of the year we sadly bade farewell to Janine Jeary , who leaves us to take up a position at St John ’ s DSG . We thank her for her devotion to this programme . She will be sorely missed .

LEADERSHIP & PUPIL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
Leadership The Leadership and Pupil Development Department always strives to expose our boys to programmes and activities that can facilitate their personal growth in leadership and character . It is our sincere desire that each boy going through the programme knows how best to lead himself , work in cooperation with others and ultimately be an upstanding leader in our society .
This is no mean feat as this type of undertaking does not take place overnight . One aspect of the programme which we believe adds a great deal to the leadership development of each boy is the leadership camps . We are very fortunate to work with the likes of Spirit of Adventure ( SOA ) and Roselands Outdoor Adventure Centre ( ROAC ) on the camping front . The Second , Fourth and Fifth Form camps all take place through SOA and our Third Form camp through ROAC . Our service providers are invaluable as they work hard to make every camp meaningful and enriching to each boy . Each camp has a specific focus per year group which has a logical well thought through progression until the final camp in Fifth Form . As we have had a great working relationship with SOA and ROAC for a number of years we have seen the fruits that the entire programme has borne and we are delighted with the outcome . Our classroom leadership focus and camp programmes integrate into a dynamic self and team-development programme encompassing a significant portion of the social development of our young men .
The Leaver Extension Programme ( LEP ) is our Sixth Form curriculum developed ‘ in house ’ to meet the specific needs of our leavers as they prepare for life beyond the bounds of our school . The curriculum is shared amongst the expertise of all the sub-departments of the Pupil Development Department namely Counselling , Careers and Tertiary Studies and Leadership . We are proud of this curriculum and of the feedback our boys give us at the end of the year and beyond . We have no doubt that LEP enables our boys to enter life out of school with a greater confidence in themselves and their futures .

Careers and Tertiary Studies The department has provided many matric and senior pupils with vast amounts of information regarding their career and tertiary programmes . We hosted all the major South African Universities during the year for their annual presentations and also organised numerous vocational presentations from people within a broad range of professional fields to address the boys . Some of these highlights included Tutors Worldwide , PKF and KPMG Chartered Accountants , AFDA and the Allan Gray Foundation .
In 2016 , the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation again recognised Maritzburg College as being a Gold Partner School for the year . Membership of the Foundation ’ s Gold Partner School is limited to the top 100 South African schools as measured by the Foundation ’ s criteria and offers our school the opportunity to nominate Grade 12 pupils to a specific Gold Partner stream . The Foundation provides full financial support for students who want to pursue tertiary studies at selected South African Universities . This wonderful opportunity , known as the Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship , explores an entrepreneurial mind-set based on a solid academic platform . In April , six matric boys were nominated for this very stringent process which culminates at the end of each year .
Through our good relationship with UKZN , the University ’ s scholarship committee again approved scholarships to 15 College Old Boys ( who matriculated in 2015 ) currently studying at UKZN in their first year . Each scholarship is to the purse value of R12,500 and is drawn from the Professor Hattersley Scholarship Fund . These scholarships are for entrant students who studied at Maritzburg College and are in the specific disciplines of Science , Engineering , Commerce and Education .
In September , the NCT Forestry Co-operative Limited also approached College with a bursary facility for young people interested in following a career in forestry . We are pleased to confirm that Neil Harris was awarded a NCT Bursary to study at Saasveld in George . This bursary is for three years and covers all travelling , accommodation and tuition fees . We wish him all the very best in this exciting career path .
During the third term , Mrs dos Santos was also very involved in the much anticipated Third Form Information Evening which was extremely well attended by both parents and boys and served to be most informative in this crucial decision process . It proved to be a very busy and successful event .
The Grade 11 Work Experience Programme was reintroduced in 2016 . Research shows that work experience definitely shapes and helps to formulate one ’ s career path . Although this in not a compulsory exercise , almost 60 % of our boys participated in this important programme . The feedback and evaluation forms completed by the participating Corporates were mostly very informative and encouraging .
