“ College were also represented at the Olympic Games , held in Rio de Janeiro , in the form of Craig Joubert [ 7s referee ], Andy Evert [ 7s manager ], Craig Mustard [ canoeing manager ] and our guest speaker , Lungani Zama , as an independent journalist . I draw an analogy with our young men in both the sporting and cultural dimensions of College , and the very essence of the Olympics and what it takes to be successful . The huge amount of commitment , dedication , perseverance that is required to earn that ever elusive gold medal is significant . Our boys continually strive to be the best that they can be in every aspect of College and there are no short cuts to success .”
Mr Bennetts welcomed special guests , parents , boys and the guest speaker , Old Collegian , Mr Lungani Zama .
Using examples from his recent experiences at the Rio Olympics as a print , television and digital media journalist , Lungani encouraged the boys to follow their dreams . His hilarious anecdotes struck a chord with the boys and parents who clearly understood the ‘ College ’ style of humour . His personal experiences made this so real to the boys who were stimulated to achieve great heights no matter what their ability .
Mr Bennetts thanked the boys for their commitment and noted that this year College boasted more codes and higher participation than ever before . The parents were thanked for their generosity of time and financial support of their lads , as well as for hosting visitors , pouring teas and the myriad other chores that they do so whole-heartedly . The staff was also lauded for going the extra mile . We are truly blessed with fine teachers and coaches who often sacrifice personal family time for the sake of their pupils .
D Marshall , B Sherwood , S Magoso , B Njapha , M Godfrey and M Forrest were worthy recipients of various hockey awards .
The musical interludes were most impressive , in both quality and variety . These boys were thanked as well as the staff who contributed to the success of this fine evening .
