SPEECH DAY significant . Make a difference in the lives of those around you , whom God has put in your path . Hopefully , your career will also be an opportunity to significantly better the lives of those around you ”.
Mr Jarvis ’ concluding message was meaningful , “‘ Even youths grow tired and weary , and young men stumble and fall ’. You are going out into a difficult world and into a nation that faces significant problems . If you face up to those challenges and aim to be significant , you are going to trip up . There is a saying that those who haven ’ t failed are those who haven ’ t tried . But you are not on your own . Isaiah goes on to say that yes , young men stumble and fall , ‘ but those that wait on the Lord will renew their strength . They will rise on wings like eagles ; they will run and not grow weary , they will walk and not be faint .’ That is my prayer as you go out into your world as educated , relationally strong and significant young men ”.
friends and our school , but we are leaving our home and family . We must not have tears of sadness but rather of joy as we focus on the privilege we have had of being a member of the class of 2016 .
Thank you , Maritzburg College .
Address by the Head Prefect , CR Glover
What makes Maritzburg College the fine establishment and the respected institution it is ?
We are one of the oldest schools in the country , with one of the largest Old Boy associations and yes , we have over 150 years of traditions , but these factors are not all that makes College , College . It is the men who have attended this fine establishment , and the men sitting before me , who make Maritzburg College the school it is today . Without these men , there would be no College .
From our first day as a Second Former , when getting lost in the red brick hallways was common , College became our home and the men around us became our family . After a few weeks , we became a part of something so special that it becomes impossible to leave College .
J Godfrey ( 1st in Form , Dux of Maritzburg College ), M Charfaray ( Third in Form ) and K Allopi ( Second in Form and ‘ Proxime Accessit ’) are the top achievers for the 2016 academic year .
A College boy stands up for what he believes in . He strives to live by his core values of : honesty , integrity , courage , self-discipline , commitment and respect . These six values define thousands of College men .
For me , if there is an all-defining feature of our school , it is the old Collegians who travel from all parts of the world to return to a place called ‘ home ’. They do not return home only to be reunited with their brothers and to support the passion and skill on Pape ’ s , or to witness that 3 o ’ clock kick off and hear the echoes of shouts on Basher Ridge , they return home because of the memories that live on inside them . They remember with nostalgia , the butterflies they experienced before running onto Goldstone ’ s for the first time , or before the opening night of the school play , or during the silence while shooting a hoop in a tight game .
Who can forget those cold Friday nights in the Clark House quad preparing for our respected rivals ? All these memories are the reason why hundreds of old Collegians return more to College .
We did not attend College only for an education ; we also came here to continue building College . You are here to honour and uphold what College stands for , and to ensure that the men leaving these gates are fine ambassadors for our school .
As I am sure every boy will agree , it takes a while to adjust before one feels at home and the reason is that , nowhere in life will you simply just sail without having any rough seas to face . You will have to sail through storms , but these challenges are there to develop character . Remember : “ We choose to do things not because they are easy but because they are hard ”.
It has been an honour and privilege to serve this great school as Head Prefect . As I stand here today for one last time , I cannot describe the emotions I am feeling - it feels surreal . It has certainly been a roller-coaster year and it is a year that I ’ m sure every Sixth Former will cherish for the rest of his life .
J Godfrey and M Godfrey both achieved outstanding results throughout their high school careers , culminating in their successes in the 2016 National Senior Certificate examinations .
To the men who are privileged to have more time here at College , I urge you to continue to strive to make College a better place . Enjoy every moment and remember to serve your school .
And finally to the men I call my brothers , thank you for the most incredible five years . We really have experienced so much together , and in every journey , there comes a time when we have to say our goodbyes . It is never easy for a College boy to bid farewell because we are not leaving our
