Milestones
Kim Storm began teaching at
College in 2012 and she taught
in the Physical Science and Maths
departments. She was actively
involved in First Aid and is leaving
us on promotion to St John’s DSG.
Brandon Swart At the end of
the second term we said goodbye
to a man who had a massive
impact on hockey at Maritzburg
College. Mr Swart, who is an Old
Collegian (2001), coached hockey
at College for 12 years and did so
with passion, pride and excellence.
He coached the U14A team for the
past nine years and laid a solid
platform for many talented hockey
players to achieve at a higher level.
His contribution to KZN Inland
Boys Hockey, as President and as
a coach, has also been significant.
His dedication and expertise will be
sorely missed.
Brandon has played an active and
substantial role at College during his
time here. He was a boarder master
in Nathan House, graduating to
housemaster of Hudson House. He
was MIC of Speaker’s Circle, HoD
of Prefects and placed his stamp
on our outstanding leadership
programme. Brandon ran the RCL
for two years and served as a staff
representative on the Governing
Body. His initiative spilled over into
the plans for the Pupil Development
Centre. He is a well-respected
housemaster amongst the boys and
their parents and he has really
stood out over the years as his self-
belief, starting of new ventures and
tackling existing roles to make them
his own, place him a cut above
many his age. Brandon is a person
who has embraced all opportunities
and tasks with enthusiasm and a
sense of purpose. He is a clear and
deep thinker who is never settles
for the ordinary. We are certainly
going to miss him as well as his
outstanding involvement and impact
in the sporting arena.
Messrs K Emerson and
K Guise-Brown
Devon van der Merwe (OC
2003) started his College teaching
career in 2014 as an EMS and
Physical Education teacher. During
his time at College he was appointed
as the Director of Hockey, was an
Assistant House Master, BE master
and a very successful 1st XI hockey
coach. Our First XI hockey has been
number one for the past three years
as a result of his coaching. Sadly he
is off to Hilton College as their 1st XI
hockey coach next year.
Kelly Woods started her teaching
career at College during 2014 as
a teacher of Accounting and EMS.
She and her husband are relocating
overseas to follow their dream in
Australia.
