SHOOTING SHOOTING Shooting Back row: R Boone, J Cook Front row: K Pretorius (captain), Mr D MacLean (coach), Mr D Kleinhans (MIC), J Cooper A large group of boys started this discipline at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately the numbers decreased gradually as the boys became more involved in other sporting activities. All our top shotists competed in all seven League shoots, which were organised by SAARA, this year. As the 2016 shooting captain, K Pretorius led by example and was awarded his Provincial Colours for his consistency maintained in the League competitions. Pretorius, S Ellis, T Cooper, R Boone and J Cooke participated in the SAARA SA Open Championships held in Vanderbijl Park during the October holidays. Pretorius obtained three bronze medals and also received two silver merit awards. Congratulations to Pretorius who, together with Ellis, also received school Honours for this discipline. We also congratulate R Boone, a Third Former, who managed to shoot the Highest Possible Score (HPS) for the first time since 2012. In October the long-awaited Eliminator Competition, sponsored by Mr MacLean and his son, was held at Hilton College. Twenty of the top shotists in KZN competed for a substantial monetary prize. After many rounds of shooting and elimination, Pretorius was eventually placed third in what was a nail-biting competition. We would like to convey our gratitude to Mr MacLean and the organising committee for making this event possible. Our boys are most fortunate to have Mr MacLean as their coach. He represented Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) at the Olympic Games in 1972 in Munchen. He was also the South African champion on numerous occasions. He has an exceptional knowledge in the art of shooting and our boys really benefit from his energetic coaching sessions. Our sincere thanks are extended to Mr MacLean on behalf of College. Thanks to all the boys for supporting shooting at College during the past year. Remember, the more you practise, the better the score. Thanks also go to Mrs K Storm for her willingness to record the score sheets on a regular basis. We would also like to say thank you to the parents who encouraged and supported their sons in this disciplined sport. Mr D Kleinhans 166
