RUGBY
7th XV 8th XV
The mSataans came through the season with flying colours, winning 10 of
their 13 games, overwhelming all KZN opposition, and losing narrowly
only to the traditional powerhouses of Grey College and Affies and in the
away fixture against PBHS, when the Open rugby teams were especially
ravaged by illness. In the process, they played some fine, gritty rugby,
and at all times wore the Red, Black and White hoops of their alma mater
with pride and vigour. A notable feature of the season was that, after
conceding 21 points in the 36-21 win at home over PBHS, the team went
a rather remarkable eight consecutive matches without conceding a single
point – and in the process scoring 295 points, at an average score of 36-0
per match. The mighty 8ths had an eventful season this year with some real ups and
some downs, but all in all it was a season to remember. They played
an exciting brand of structured rugby throughout the season. These boys
showed true College rugby passion for the Red, Black and White. Many
thanks must go to Mr Kyle for going out of his way to make sure we always
had a game.
The highlights of the season included the two big drubbings handed out to
our friends from Umbilo, the thrashing of a hard-pressed Northwood outfit,
and the tenacity shown against the big boerseuns from up-country.
That great stalwart of the side was the captain, A Sutherland, who was
well-organised, an inspiration and fiercely loyal to his team. Other loyal
stalwarts who fought in the trenches for the mSataans in the 2016 campaign
included J Thring (a hard-tackling midfielder), K Coetzee and R Immelman
(two gritty tight forwards), M Harris (a ferreting loose-forward who was an
ideal team-man), A Spies (the grizzled enforcer of the pack), N Phili and
J Sibiya (two dogged loose-forwards who worked well in tandem), A Duma
(an honest scrummager), W Mpofu (the motivator of the team), T Snyman
(a determined, nuggety scrumhalf) and A Kostakis (a speedy winger who
ran hard for the corner).
My thanks go to the boys for a season that I will remember with quiet
satisfaction for a long time, as well as to my Old Boy colleagues, amongst
whom we forged a splendid working relationship: Messrs S Xulu,
B Mdutyana and KG Shezi.

9th XV
The 9th XV had a relatively successful season as the results indicate. It must
be remembered that most games were played on the stagger. The boys are

so many changes to the side.

10th XV
Despite having not played many games this season the 10th team came
away with an impressive four wins out of the six games they played,
losing only to Grey College and Affies. Throughout the season the
boys participated enthusiastically at practices and showed heart and
determination during games. Their consistency was proved when they
went up against the same Linpark team twice in one season and emerged
victorious on both occasions.
Towards the end of the season B Robertson took over the role of captain
and led with integrity in both victory and defeat. The highlight of the season
was a hotly contested game against St Charles. The conditions were wet
and muddy, but the team pushed throughout the game and managed to
steal it at the last minute with the final try coming from a brilliant maul drive.
