HOCKEY
2nd XI
vs Affies (Home): Won 3-0
College returned from what was a very successful holiday period with
many players representing the school provincially and nationally. Affies
travelled down to Pietermaritzburg and this turned out to be a quality
contest with College emerging 3-0 victors. The first half was tight with both
teams coming close to scoring and having a fair number of chances. The
teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0. It took College four minutes
in the second half to take the lead with a wonderful individual effort from
Sherwood and in the next fifteen minutes they added two more. It was
another convincing performance from the College outfit on Pape’s.
Goalscorers: Sherwood (2), Glutz
vs Pretoria Boys High School (Away): Lost 2-1
College travelled to Pretoria to take on the very exciting PBHS team. After
losing 3-2 to College in Pietermaritzburg, the home team reversed the result
to beat College 2-1 on the day. College soaked up immense pressure in the
first ten minutes of the game but then settled down, dominating possession
and taking the lead with a field goal. With thirty seconds left in the first
half PBHS drew level from a penalty corner. The second half, again, started
quickly with a few exchanges between the two teams but PBHS had the final
say when College lost the ball in midfield and the PBHS striker smashed the
ball past the College goalkeeper into the bottom corner. College had more
possession and opportunities, but lacked the sting in the tail.
The College 2nd XI hockey season proved to be a tough one and the team
would have been understandably a bit disappointed with the set of results.
Mr Mncwango was unfortunately unable to continue after three games
and Mr Jones returned as the coach of the 2nd XI. Despite the inconsistent
results and performances, the 2nd XI at times produced some good periods
of play. The last game of the season at home against Glenwood was an
indication of what this team could do when plans were correctly executed.
A special mention must go to this group of boys, who, despite losing a few
key members to the 1st XI during the season, never used this as an excuse
and often played with new combinations. We are proud of Z Zondi who
was selected for the KZN U18B hockey team. A special thank you must go
out to the parents for their support throughout the season. I would like to
wish all these boys well for their future endeavours.

vs Glenwood High School (Home): Won 2-1
College returned to Pape’s to complete their season against Glenwood and
were very keen to get back to their winning ways! The previous encounter
saw College beat Glenwood away 4-2. This was a tough battle between
the two teams; College completed their final match with a 2-1 victory over
the visitors. The game started quickly and had good intensity. After a goal
had been disallowed, College scored two drag flicks in quick succession to
take a 2-0 lead into the break and controlled possession. Glenwood looked
more convincing in the second half and pulled one back with four minutes
to go. The match ended 2-1 in favour of the home team. This was a hard
fought win to finish off the season.

3rd XI
The 2016 hockey season for the 3rd XI was an intense, hard but enjoyable
one. Having lost a number of key players early on in the season owing to
injury, the boys took longer than anticipated to settle into winning ways.
However, once some continuity was achieved, the boys started playing
some good hockey. Some tough opposition saw us narrowly lose a few
games and probably the highlights of the season were good wins over
Kearsney, Hilton, DHS and Westville.
