CRICKET 2nd XI The 2nd XI enjoyed a very successful year. Of the 13 matches played eight were won, two were lost and three were rained out. The side worked very hard during the year and was able to play dominant cricket. They need to be commended for their discipline and all the hard work they put in during the year. The senior players created a warm, inviting environment that made it easy for the younger boys to fit into the culture of the side. Much of the team’s success must be credited to the leadership and confidence shown by the older boys. The season started with a match against Westville who batted first and struggled to 90 all out thanks to some good bowling from Ten-Bokkel Huinink. In reply College were 92/0 thanks to Watson’s 52 not out, giving College victory by 10 wickets. College then took on Glenwood who struggled to 104 due to some tremendous bowling from Jeary who took 6/15. College ended 11 runs short 93/4 when the rain came. College continued this good form when they took on Hilton on Goldstone’s. Some aggressive batting from Speller Burls (72) and Gengan (49) helped College to 256/6. Hilton’s batting line-up was destroyed by Ten-Bokkel Huinink who took 4/11 in bowling Hilton out for 61, giving College victory by 195 runs. College struggled against Michaelhouse and were soon in trouble at 72 for 7 but managed to get to 138 with Diedericks’ tally of 53. Ten-Bokkel Huinink’s bowling (5/4) restricted Michaelhouse to 91 all out, giving College victory by 47 runs. The 2nd XI ended the first term with two away fixtures in Durban. At DHS, the opposition put on a good batting display to reach 167, but College passed that with only 3 wickets down thanks to Watson’s 59, giving College victory by 7 wickets. The last match of the first term, against Kearsney, turned out to be a real ‘humdinger’ with Kearsney scoring 227. Rowe, with 4/24, was the best of the College bowlers. Speller Burls’ 56 runs helped College get to 222 – just 5 runs short. The third term began with a fixture against local rivals Voortrekker. College won easily scoring 185 and bowling Voortrekker out for 86. The second match, against Westville, was washed out. In the return match against Kearsney College struggled to 180 all out and had Kearsney 78/7 but they managed to get to 181/8 despite the efforts of Shearer (4/16) and Kearsney inflicted the second defeat on College. The side needed a good recovery against Michaelhouse, and found the spark in some good pace bowling from Elliott (5/18) and Jeary (3/15) that allowed College to bowl them out for 119. Webster’s 53 not out took College to a victory by 5 wickets. In wet weather conditions College’s bowlers struggled with a wet ball to bowl St Charles out for 196. Webster (51 not out) continued his good form and was ably assisted by Parak (53), enabling College to win by 7 wickets. The match against Glenwood was cancelled due to rain. The final match was against DHS. The bowling unit again struggled with a wet ball but wicket-keeper, Pio, helped to restrict DHS to 123 with his bowling spell of 5/7. College’s batsmen (Parak 48* and Heuer 42) set up an easy victory by 8 wickets. Thanks must go to the ground staff for the fantastic cricket field maintenance which provided a good wicket. Mr Leroy’s organisation and attention to detail as master-in-charge of cricket ensured that all the basics were covered. Lastly, Mr Gqadushe (the current Inland captain) was able to offer the boys real and up-to-date knowledge and played an important role in their development.
