Potchefstroom Boys ’ High School Festival
The team had a very successful trip to Potchefstroom , winning four out of four against decent opposition and in baking sunshine at the inaugural Heritage Cricket Festival . The trip was really worthwhile as the team grew in confidence after a mediocre first term and they played as an energetic and cohesive unit .
vs North West Academy vs Durban High School ( DHS ) ( Goldstone ’ s )
College welcomed DHS to a hot and muggy Maritzburg . Skipper Pillay won the toss and chose to bat . Good , consistent batting , highlighted by Dicks ’ 63 , saw College reach 233 / 9 after 50 overs ; a very good score . Pursuing this score , DHS wilted in the face of a disciplined bowling and fielding display . With heavy cloud cover and the threat of rain later on , Pillay brought both spinners into the attack and the pair got through their overs very quickly and economically . This resulted in the batsmen trying to hit their way out of pressure and they also began taking risks between wickets . The College fielding unit was on top form and had three run outs towards the end of the match . College bowled DHS out for 115 in 37 overs . It was a wonderful team performance in the end and the improvement shown over the past few weeks had been very exciting to watch .

vs Kearsney College ( Goldstone ’ s )
Kearsney made the trip up to College for the final cricket match of the first term . The teams were welcomed by a very cool and pleasant overcast day , a nice change from the extreme heat we had been experiencing over the past few months . Skipper Pillay won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to bat first . Wickets fell regularly and College were in some trouble at 95 / 7 before Steenkamp and Botes gritted out a wonderful partnership of 85 runs in 20 overs . Steenkamp ’ s 94 off 108 balls was worth its weight in gold and Botes ’ fighting innings of 25 off 62 balls was invaluable . College had fought themselves to a very decent first innings total of 205 but would have to bowl and field really well to make it count . Kearsney started well but Sherwood bowled superbly to take 3 / 13 in 6 overs as they were reduced to 72 / 8 . The bowlers were extremely well supported by the fielding unit which was really on song . The boys were diving around and stopping almost everything and the hunger and passion was a delight to watch . After tea , the final two wickets fell and Kearsney were all out for 97 . It was a wonderful way to end off the term after a tough start to the year .

The toss was won by Pillay who elected to bat first on a decent looking track . Muirhead played an inventive innings of 53 off 38 balls . The star of the show , however , was Pillay , who played with destructive class , leaving players and spectators speechless with his seemingly effortless ability to pick the gaps and find the boundaries .
