Review by the master-in-charge
Maritzburg College provided cricket for approximately 308 boys this year
which equates to 28 sides broken down as follows: six open teams, five
U16, seven U15, and ten U14 sides. We had 22 permanent staff members
gainfully employed on a Saturday but had to call on the services of six extra
coaches, mostly young students, who have been reliable and enthusiastic.
They coached at College last year and are thus reasonably familiar with
the College setup. College has once again ensured that the top teams
have that little extra something by having Inland Provincial cricketers as the
A-team assistant coaches. The end of the third term brought two full sets of cricket fixtures against
Westville and Kearsney with the A-teams playing St Charles in a T20.
The results from these fixtures were mixed but were not the start to the
season we had hoped for. During the holiday the 1st XI participated in the
57th Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week winning only one of their
four games and sadly throwing the final game away to Hudson Park. Our
U16, U15 and U14 sides also participated in their own respective festivals
which were badly weather affected, but there were some very promising
results from all three teams.
The first team had a very slow start to the season but warmed up towards
the end and we had high hopes for them in the latter part of the season.
They participated in the DHS 150th festival in January winning only one
of their three games. They then proceeded to lose to Westville, Glenwood
and Hilton before ending the season with wins over St Charles (T20), DH
