What a year this has been . These talented young men went out and proved the doubters wrong by beating all the schools against which they had lost last year . The boys were willing to give up their Fridays for extra practice in order to improve as a team . It was a pleasure to coach a group that was willing to go the extra mile to do well . The fourth term saw them lose only one game , to Michaelhouse , compared to the first term where they lost four games . These boys have truly made College basketball a beauty to watch . They brought back the College basketball of old , keeping the game at a high tempo at all times . It was a season to remember .
Three of our boys made the KZN mock team for next year . We wish these boys well as they go to the St John ’ s Tournament and hopefully show the other schools how far they have come . Special thanks to Trollip , Phenyane and Howard for helping me run this team - their leadership skills are developing well .
Player Critique :
S Trollip ( Captain , PMB Schools U15 ): This young man has improved so much this year and he has a true love for the game . His hard work outside of practice days and during the off-season has clearly paid off .
Z Khoza ( PMB Schools U15 ): He is a reliable player who , when called upon , did what was asked of him . His reading of the game improved and he was able to make crucial plays for the team in tight games . He was the most improved player on both sides of the court .
N Phenyane ( PMB Schools U15 ): Due to the lack of height in the team , he had to play out of position but that did not stop him from being consistent and one of the ‘ go to ’ players . When he did play in his position he dominated the court and really was a threat to the opposition .
D Cooper : This young man understands the game and had the ability to pop up in good shooting positions or underneath the hoop for an easy shot . Work on his game is needed to help him improve , however , and become more of a threat to the opposition .
Z Jali : He is a good player whose direct approach to the game proves threatening to the opposition . He does , however , need to improve on his decision-making as to when to attack and when to pass .
M Suwila : He is a dynamic and energetic player who passed his opposition easily . He trusted his ability on the court and was a good team player .
M Mbanjwa : He was regarded as the ‘ big man ’ in the team . This young man often did the mundane work for the team . His winning of both defensive and offensive rebounds was invaluable . He does need to improve on being heard during the game as he is often too quiet .
K Howard : He understands the game well and had the best basketball IQ in the team . He had the ability to get to the hoop and shoot and he passed very well . He is definitely a player to be watched in the future but he needs to trust himself more when he is on the court . He needs to work more on his defensive skills .
J Marx ( PMB Schools U15 ): No matter how much pressure was on him , he remained calm when in possession and did not allow unnecessary turnovers . He played out of position for most of the season but was allowed to roam around on offence because he has a beautiful shot . He was a pleasure to coach .
A Matsheke : He was an exceptional player and gave a hundred percent every time he was on the court . He also performed the mundane requirements of the game for the team . He has greatly improved his offensive game this year and he is a player to watch out for in the future .

The U15C side had a great season , losing just one match out of nine ( the first game of the season ). After the initial loss , they worked very hard and their results improved tremendously . I felt honoured to coach these dedicated players . They trained and played with passion and good team spirit . The support of the parents played an important role in the team ’ s performance and helped them to overcome their opposition time and again .

The U15B team had a year of ups and downs . The first term was a mighty success as they won every game with relative ease . Sadly the fourth term was not as successful . However , the one thing that was constant during the year was the boys ’ willingness to work and their character in not giving up without a fight . The biggest reward was to see the boys work harder at practice when the results were not looking good . Overall it was a good experience for both the team and myself . We learnt how to win and lose . There is no ‘ I ’ in team and that was clear in this group .
