Review by master-in-charge
Basketball is alive and well at College with the number of boys interested in
playing the sport increasing every year. We have, for certain fixtures, been
able to field as many as 16 teams. In the first term a total of 113 games
were played and this excludes the tournament games.
The U16A team played in the Michaelhouse Tournament at the beginning
of the year and took part in the St John’s College U16 tournament. They
were placed third at the Michaelhouse tournament. The 1st team travelled
to Johannesburg in February to play in the St John’s Invitational Tournament
where they gave a good account of themselves, being placed third after
losing to PBHS in the semi-final. They played in the DHS 150th Festival over
the Easter weekend where they lost to the host school in the final. They also
represented the City of Pietermaritzburg in the Marlins Inter-city tournament
which was won by DHS.
At the end of 2016 the basketball fraternity had to bid farewell to two very
loyal and committed coaches: Mr T Xulu and Mr C Siwila. Both of these
gentlemen will be sorely missed by the boys and coaches alike. We thank
them both for the hard work done in the U15 age group and wish them
well at their new schools.
All the people associated with the sport would like to thank Messrs Ken
Hackland and Shaun Crosson and their band of willing helpers who
prepared the Alan Paton Memorial Hall for basketball matches, often
under trying circumstances, with such patience. Our thanks also go to
Mrs Heather Lawson for ensuring that the coaches and players were
suitably hydrated on the very hot match days. Lastly, sincere thanks to
Mr Luman and Mr Bennetts for their support during the year.
Congratulations to the players who were selected for the Provincial and
National teams.
