Owachomo Bridge

Natural Bridges National Monument in southeast Utah is where I first learned about the basic photographic methodology to capture the Milky Way with a regular digital camera.  Natural Bridges is located in one of the few “Dark Sky” areas of the country.  This was one of the first images where I experimented with combining the Milky Way exposure with an earlier exposure of the foreground with ambient light just after sunset.  This image won the Landscape Award at the Marin County Fair.  More of my Milky Way images and my camera setting can be found on this website:  milkywayphotos.shutterfly.

competitions, but after some time I decided that I wanted something specific to specialize in. So, I developed my own technique, in particular with lighting. My style of photography takes intensive planning over several months. I need to organize to be in the right place at the right time. Climate, moon phases, the temperature has to be exactly right. I can spend months and months planning only to have the trip become a complete bust because of weather and other elements like clouds. In one of my photos, the one which won the National Geographic Photo Contest, 20 or 30 photographers came to the same spot over the course of the evening, only to leave. I stayed, waited and got the shot. More of Keith Marsh’s work can be viewed at kmarsh.com.
