“He’s great at photographing children.
His love for kids just shows. He plays ball
with them. He encourages them to do
handstands,” says Marty. She adds that
George’s ability to interact with people
and show a genuine interest in them is a
valuable skill, because he makes people
feel comfortable, so they enjoy having
him take their photographs.
One of Marty’s top destinations is
Guatemala. “I find the culture so
interesting. The people are warm and
friendly. The photography there is
unique,” she says. For the past two
years, she and George have also visited
Oaxaca, Mexico, and “We just had a
marvelous time,” she says, explaining
that they rented a house for a month
and spent time photographing the city.
“I did a whole series on shadows,” she
says, adding that she was the head of
design at an architectural firm and is
drawn to scenes with lines and structure.
Marty and George have entered their
photos in the Marin County Fair for
many years, and while George has sold
the most, Marty has more ribbons. In
2016, she won Exhibitor of the Year for
a series of eight photos printed on velum
with precious metal backing. “I couldn’t
have asked for anything more,” she says.
“It was such an honor.”
The Cagwins have started exploring the
United States and recently spent two
weeks in New Mexico. Wherever they
go, they take their cameras and find
that photography brings unexpected
pleasures. “It’s one of the joys of being
on these trips,” says Marty. “You see
things you would never see if you were a
regular tourist.”
