Killman, who has been in the business for more than 30 years and has had an office in Larkspur for 20, began her career in furnishings, designing and making furniture using antique textiles. “Furnishings is my true love,” she says, expressing a special appreciation for textiles, with their variety of fabrics and different finishes. “It makes the home so comfortable. There are so many beautiful offerings,” she observes. She purchases some items at the Design Center in San Francisco, which offers wooden case goods as well as a variety of fabrics. She also has some furniture made and says, “We have a coterie of crafts people who make things for us,” and that includes lighting designers who make custom fixtures, upholsterers and makers of window coverings and bedding. “We also place art,” she says. Killman leafs through shelter magazines and keeps up to date with the latest trends, and she observes that so many choices can be overwhelming. “It’s hard to decide what’s right for your project,” she says, and so she goes shopping with clients to help them sift through myriad offerings, and she points out appropriate choices. “When I recommend something, I tell them why I decided and why it’s good. It’s an educational process for them that’s fun and empowering,” she says. “The most fun is walking through at the end,” she says, adding that she enjoys the originality of her work and the way it’s always different.
