That same group of musicians was also the founding core of the Starduster Orchestra . On an evening in 1996 , a bunch of us got together at the Marin Primary School for our first rehearsal . Five of the musicians in that room are still with the Starduster Orchestra today . We are now in our 22 nd year together .

We play gigs all over the Bay Area , including repeat engagements at the Marin Senior Fair ; the Marines ’ Memorial Club ; the Belvedere-Tiburon Cotillion ; and we are completing our fifth year at the Mill Valley Community Center . We have been playing at the Mill Valley Community Center on the third Tuesday of every month for the past five years . We call these dances Starduster Tuesdays , and we ’ ve been re-engaged to perform there for our 6 th year in 2018 .

MA & C : With what other outlets are you associated ?

J . A .: I was Executive Director for the Fairfax Jazz Festival , Music Director for Radio Sausalito , served on the board of the Mountain Play and the American Institute of Food and Wine ( AIWF ) and am on the staff of the Monterey Jazz Festival . I am also active in the Sonoma State University music program . I play as much as I can , including with the Harold Jones Big Band , the Starduster Orchestra , the Sonoma State Symphonic Wind Ensemble , my own sextet and several other groups .

MA & C : A little about your family …

J . A .: I am married to Maggie with four daughters and five grandchildren scattered all over the country , ( Durango , Atlanta , Memphis , and Asheville ). My mom , who is in her hundred and first year , and my sister live in North Carolina .
