PLATE 38. Theatre de la Guerre en Espagne et en Portugal, from Nieuwe atlas ... by Johannes Covens and Cornelis Mortier (Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, ca. 1740) maps part of the Iberian Peninsula. The War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) illustrates the cartouche. The Archduke Charles (a young Charles III) appears on a horse, although the title of the map on a big rock dedicates this work to Philip V. To save money this map was reissued with minor differences from a map, by Pierre Mortier and dedicated to Charles III, of around 1710, and neither the face of the sovereign nor the Habsburg symbols were changed, although when it was published Philip V of the Bourbon dynasty reigned in Spain.
