“The experience, innovation and problem
solving skills of our team, attained over the
years, have helped us to win many repeat
contracts and since 1986 we have been
working closely with Tata Steel UK Ltd at
both Port Talbot and Llanwern Steelworks
handling landfill and developing zero waste
processes,” enthuses Paul.
Indeed, DLS has held the Industrial
Waste Management contract for Tata since
1986. Services include all aspects of
recording and reporting waste tonnages to
the customs and excise for landfill taxation,
waste deposition, landfill construction,
restoration and monitoring.
A recent project took place in India for Tata
Steel. Tata’s Indian operations draw upon its
greatest strength as one of the lowest cost producers of steel in the world. The capacity
expansion at Jamshedpur has been an important growth project and will help strengthen
the product portfolio in India while rebalancing
steelmaking capacities across the Group.
DLS provided the design and the equipment
which included material pre-conditioning/demetaling screens, a three-stage attritional wash
process, conveyors, an electrolytic coagulation
water recycling process and emulsion separator, 6.6kv transformer, L.V substation and a

machine control centre comprising of a series
of electrical control panels and a H.M.I (Human
Machine Interface) display screen.
DLS also organised and arranged for the
shipment of the process equipment into India,
as well as supplying the necessary engineers to
oversee the installation, commissioning, training and 12-month supervision of the project.
The benefits of DLS’ work were widespread
for Tata Steel. Utilising the company’s mill scale
de-oiling process enabled Tata to recycle in
excess of 100,000 tonnes of mill scale in the
first year as an iron ore supplement valued in
the region of £65/tonne. This surpassed Tata’s
production and quality specifications.
DLS also works with a number of other blue
chip companies including Lafarge Tarmac,
Rockwool, Hargreaves Industrial services and
Balfour Beatty, and has established links as a
subcontractor with Network Rail.
“We are a single source solutions
provider,” remarks Paul. “From collection of
industrial and commercial waste, to the management of waste and the recycling processes
of retrieving value from waste, Darlow Lloyd
& Sons Ltd will handle every aspect of industrial waste management.”
