What is the point of industry awards? Anyone who disregards them as pointless and
unproductive underestimates the power of incentivising performance and rewarding best
practice on the operational quality of an organisation. Industry-supported awards breed
success just as much as they celebrate it.
This month we saw the Manufacturing Institute retain its sponsorship of Works
Management’s Manufacturing Champions Awards. This prestigious event looks at the people
within manufacturing who are finding new ways to power the sector. Specifically targeted at
personal achievement, the awards seek to highlight the efforts of those individuals helping
UK business “take on the world”.
The fact the Manufacturing Institute is supporting the event gives further credibility to the
awards with the institute voicing its delight at retaining its sponsorship deal. The
Manufacturing Institute is a leading industry charity and training provider, and works with
more than 10,000 businesses while educating 50,000 manufacturers and delivering upwards
of £1.1bn of cost benefits.
Expansion of manufacturing facilities, adaptation and implementation in the latest
technology, and investment in skills is so vital to today’s industry. Celebrating performance
drives further growth and development; it’s vital in our support of UK manufacturing and our
determination to successfully compete internationally. Indeed, while we’re now out of the
bleak recessionary years of the late 2000s, the climate still demands we reward best practice,
the value of working together and finding the right solutions for customers.
At the core of all this is people. Without them, businesses wouldn’t be able to progress.
Importantly, while we often see leaders coming from top management roles, the
Manufacturing Champions come from all areas of a company. High performance, leadership
and innovation may appear from those who might not have enjoyed formal management
training. These awards are therefore even more important as they celebrate best practice
from the top down and the bottom up.
