MISD Students Win Medals at State
Academic Decathlon Competition
Summit High School, Lake Ridge High School and
Legacy High School students competed in the state Aca-
demic Decathlon (AcDec) competition in San Antonio and
came back with medals.
AcDec is a ten-event scholastic competition that pro-
vides high school students an opportunity to experience
the challenges of rigorous academic competition through
participation in team activities. Students must compete in
seven multiple-choice exams, an essay, an interview and a
speech.
Summit High School earned two medals. Fatima Al-
Fadil earned a first place medal in interview. Tiffany Yang
placed third in music and first place in prepared speech.
Lake Ridge High School earned three individual med-
als. Vivian Nguyen placed second in social science honors.
Jean Cook earned first place in interview and Caleb Ath-
ens earned first place in speech honors.
Legacy High School earned a total of three medals,
and every student who competed increased their score.
Phillip Ipock placed third in the essay event. Natalie Pon-
der earned third place for interview. Helen Baker earned
first place for interview with a perfect score.
Academic Decathlon students from Summit, Lake Ridge and Legacy High
Schools were recognized for their top honors at the board meeting.

Conference
Mansfield ISD hosted
its third annual Innovation
Conference, “Transforming
Early Childhood Education,”
at the Dr. Sarah K. Jan-
drucko Academy for Early
Learners on May 6-9.
The conference, which
drew educators and leaders
from across the state, in-
cluded a tour of The Acad-
emy, history and research
behind the creation of the
unique facility and offered
tips and techniques on how
to provide experiential learn-
ing and instructional strat-
egies for early learners. The
conference featured three
one-day seminars where
participants were immersed
in the active explorative
experiences.
“We are thrilled to
showcase the Dr. Sarah K.
Jandrucko Academy for
Early Learners,” said Asso-
ciate Superintendent Dr.
Sean Scott. “Not only is it an
opportunity to share what’s
happening in MISD, but we
believe that our approach
will have a profound impact
on academic readiness and
we want to share that with
other educators throughout
the state.”
The Dr. Sarah K. Jan-
drucko Academy for Early
Learners, which opened in
January, is the first pre-kin-
dergarten campus of its
kind in Mansfield ISD and
the state of Texas. It was
perfectly designed for in-
quiring young minds using
creative, hands-on, inter-
active experiences within
a researched-based early
childhood program.
