Athletes Earn Top Spots At Regional Meet — Three qualify for state competition — MANSFIELD ISD | Three Mans- field ISD student-athletes returned home from a statewide compe- tition as some of the best in their aquatic category. The 2019 UIL Swimming and Diving Meet was held Feb. 15-16 in Austin. Kyle Sanchez, from Lake Ridge High School, earned the gold medal in the 1-meter dive. Legacy High School’s Eric Stelmar received a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke and a bronze medal in the 200-meter Maddie Mechling of Mansfield HS, Kyle Sanchez from Lake Ridge HS and Eric Stelmar of Legacy HS train at the MISD Natatorium before school. freestyle event. Mansfield High School’s Mad- die Mechling won the bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley. The students qualified for the state competition after finishing in the top spots at regionals. STEM Academy To Host Empowering Event STEM ACADEMY | The Jerry Knight STEM Academy’s Empowering Girls Club is having a kick-off event for moms and daughters on Saturday, April 6 at the Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts. Girls in grades 5th - 6th in MISD schools are all invited. This day of girls empowerment will be starting at 10 AM and end at 3 PM. The mission with the Empowering Girls kickoff event is to show girls that they are beautiful inside and out and they can do anything they set their mind to. Empowering Girls began in the fall of 2018. It was created to help girls feel smart, confident, and self-driven. In December of 2018, Empowering Girls was awarded a grant from the MISD Education Foundation. “We love that our learners at the Jerry Knight STEM Academy have been challenged with identifying problems in the community and developing solutions for them. We provide them with the structure, time and space so that they can own their learning as innovative problem solvers,” said Victoria Webster, Associate Principal Jerry Knight STEM Academy. 16 | Mansfield ISD TODAY Erica C., Lillian O., Rebecca P., and Anna T., are the founders of Empowering Girls and 7th grade learners at Jerry Knight STEM Academy. The club, which began as a school project, is now blossoming into an ongoing resource for female students to be empowered and inspired for years to come.
