THREE MISD BANDS EARN MARK OF
EXCELLENCE AWARD
T
hree Mansfield ISD band
ensembles won the
2018 Mark of Excellence
from The Foundation for
Music Education for their
outstanding performances.
The Mark of Excellence is
a national competition in
which bands from all over
the country submit their best
recording from the spring.
The music is then judged
and ranked by nationally
renowned adjudicators.
The top 25 percent of entrants
are selected as National
Winners. The second quarter
receive Commended Honors.
The Summit High School
Wind Symphony, directed by
Chris Kanicki, was selected
as a Commended Winner.
Congratulations to the
following MISD ensembles:
The T.A. Howard Middle
School Honor Band, directed
by Nathaniel Neugent, was
selected as a National Winner.
The Lake Ridge High School
Wind Symphony, directed
by Brad Bonebrake, was
selected as a Commended
Winner. The group was also
commended in the Class 6A
and New Music divisions.
The winners will be
recognized in publications
and at regional and
national conventions. All
of the groups will receive
trophies, comments from
the adjudicators and a
compilation recording of
the National Winners.
This year, a total of 279
musical ensembles from 38
states entered the Mark of
Excellence competition.
BORDER BRAWL CREATES NEW
COMPETITION FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES
A
battle over state
lines kicked off
the Mansfield ISD
2018-19 high school
football season and
will continue when
track and field begins.
MISD football teams,
bands, cheerleaders,
drill teams and fans
made the trip up
north to celebrate
the inaugural Border
Brawl football
competition on Aug. 31, in
which five MISD teams faced
five Oklahoma teams.
The Oklahoma competition
included teams from Union,
Jenks, Broken Arrow,
new opportunities
while engaging in
friendly competition.
Fans traveled in large numbers
to show their support.

Border Brawl was brought
to life by MISD Athletics
Director Philip O’Neal and
Superintendent Dr. Jim
Vaszauskas. The idea was
to provide students with
20
“I think it’s important for
us to create experiences
for them,” said O’Neal.
“The connections and
lessons they learn from
going beyond their
region will help them
in college and in life.”
Mansfield ISD will face
the same Oklahoma
teams at the start of the 2019
track and field season.
Details are to be determined,
but the meet will take
place in the Tulsa area.
