The Channel Tunnel - 25 Year Anniversary

One of the biggest engineering projects in the UK officially opened 25 years ago, as of the 6th of May.

The Channel Tunnel which runs from Folkestone to near Calais in France, took more than five years to complete and is now used by over 22 million passengers every year. It is the only fixed link between the island of Great Britain and the European mainland.

The tunnel itself has a length of over

50km and cost around £9 billion to

create, well over its predicted budget.

However over the last 25 years it has

been used by millions and will

continue to do so for the foreseeable

future.

Fun fact: They didn't quite meet in the

middle - the English side tunnelled the

greater distance! (Picture courtesy of the Institution of Civil Engineers)
